What's Happening in the F/1 Classroom?
This week in Literacy we have been focussing on the /h/ sound. The students have been enjoying finding this sound while reading, making uppercase and lowercase h words using play dough, and building and decoding words with the /h/ sound.
We used the Soundwaves program to assist our learning.
How many /h/ words can you find in the picture below?
We wrote some /h/ sentences about ourselves too!
We have continued to practice our counting in Foundation from 1 - 20 and in Grade 1, 1 - 100. We have been making collections to match amounts, doing some basic addition and playing lots of number games. We have also been learning the Auslan signs from 1 - 20.
The children have been revising their positional language and discussing the position of the buildings and spaces of our school. We were able to make a map of our school using photographs and then placed farm animals on the photos for the children to describe their position eg 'the horse is next to the sandpit'.
We have loved exploring our beautiful school garden with Deb over the last couple of weeks. We have been involved in planting, watering, weeding, raking leaves to put in the chicken coop, looking after our chickens and learning about what to plant at this time of year. We also got creative with some of our bamboo sticks and decided to try to make teepees! It was wonderful to see the children working cooperatively together and listening to each other's ideas respectfully.
We had lots of interesting questions and conversations in relation to Reconciliation Week. The children enjoyed learning about the history of the week and why it is such an important occasion. We loved our exploration afternoon on Friday where we had the opportunity to make jewellery, paint, draw, decorate clapping sticks, make headbands and collages. We discussed the Children’s Ground charity and how they help the next generation of indigenous Australians to know and celebrate their culture and identity.
Here are some of our thoughts on Reconciliation Week:
‘Reconciliation Week is about saying sorry to indigenous people’ - Finley
‘We wear yellow today because it's Reconciliation Week and we’re raising money for Aboriginal people’ - Max
‘I liked eating the cupcakes and wearing yellow clothes today’ - Ryan
‘We wore yellow for Reconciliation Week’ - Grace
‘This week I learnt about helping Aboriginal people’ - Noah
