Level 1: Connect

Here we are at the end of week 6 already! The term is flying by!

If you would like to help your child at home:

See if your child can explain the 'magic e' rule to your family. "The 'magic e' at the end makes the vowel before it say its name".

Heart Words

Students need to learn these words off by heart as they cannot be sounded out.

  1. Say the letter names, then the word.
  2. Write the letters and say the letter name whilst writing the letter.
  3. Write the word 3 times.

Heart words to practise: could, should, would, want, where, what

Some fun during developmental Play:

Literacy:

Over the next two weeks we will be concentrating on:

  • Heart Words - again, today, going, come, some, other, here
  • Rule review: reviewing the rule the magic e rule.
  • Phonemes - the FLOSS rule! When a one-syllable word ends in f, l, or s, double the final f, l, or s (for example, sniff, fall, mess). We call this the floss spelling rule because the word floss follows this rule and includes the letters f, l, and s to help us remember the rule. Also 'all' as in ball at the end of a word.
  • Morphology learning: The prefix re- which means to do again. Examples: reread, retell, rebuild. The prefix mis-, meaning incorrect or badly.

Maths

In Numeracy, students have been focusing on recognising numbers up to 100. These numbers can be modelled using MAB unifix, or as a tally. Students have then been practising ordering and writing these numbers. We have been consolidating our understanding of partitioning and learning how to use this to solve problems.

We have also been looking at time, understanding that the hour hand moves slowly as the minute hand rounds the clock. The aim is for students to understand that the hour hand would be half way between the two and three when it is 2:30.

Writing

In writing students are learning about story writing process - planning, writing and editing.

Planning - Students have learnt about three tools to help them plan a story - Story map, Graphic Organiser, Five finger tool

Writing- Students write a short story with a clear beginning, middle and end.

Editing - Students go over their work checking for punctuation, spelling and meaning.

Buddies

Students enjoyed working on creating a collaborative art piece inspired by the 'Rainbow Serpent'. Once complete this will be on display for everyone. Stay tuned for more information.
