Foundation: Connect

Term 2

Reflection of Week 5 and 6.

Literacy

Over the last two weeks we have made our way to the end of the alphabet learning about the letter, z, y and qu. We have now completed the alphabet which is very exciting!

In Literacy, we have also focused on our new Heart words, that are included below. Students need to learn these words off by heart as they cannot be sounded out.

If you would like to practise these at home here are 3 steps.

  1. Say the letter names, then the word.
  2. Write the letters and say the letter name whilst writing the letter.
  3. Write the word 3 times.

Keeping with the theme of Literacy, during Week 6, Foundation and Grade 1 students came together and participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time on Wednesday 22nd May. If you don’t know what that is, here is a little bit of a blurb for more information.

'National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.'

Numeracy

Over the last two weeks in Numeracy we have continued working on addition and subtraction. We have looked at different vocabulary for the words to gain a deeper understanding and how they are connected.

We have been using lots of manipulatives such as teddies, trains, counters, dice, subitising collections and unfix just to name a few. We have also started to look at informal units of measurement. We measured how long our shoes are by using unfix.  We then went and explored and measured other things around us.

Week 7 and 8

Casting forward, we are well into the term and into assessment. Over the coming weeks we will be completing various assessments within our classrooms. It is always great to see how much learning has happened over the very first semester of school.

In Literacy we will be using lots of picture prompts to have students thinking about the when, where, who and what. This is to expand our knowledge and thinking and to work towards creating interesting sentences orally and by writing. Now that we have finished the alphabet, we will be moving onto digraphs. A digraph is two letters working together to make one combined sound. For example, in Week 7 our chosen digraph is ‘ch’ for chair and Week 8 will be ‘sh’ for ship.

In Numeracy, we are continuing to build our knowledge of addition and subtraction. We are linking the relationship between subtraction and addition through the use of the bar model.  This is because it supports students to see how all the information is connected through the one visual. At the end of Week 7, have your child try to discover the missing information from the bar model below. Let them use some type of manipulative.

Can you help us?

Unused Dominoes

We are on the hunt for unused dominoes for Numeracy! If you have dominoes laying around at home that you no longer need we would love them.  If you have them and no longer have use for these please bring these into your child’s classroom teacher as we have many uses for these.
