SSP NEWS:

Team Selection Process for Tournaments and Competitions

It is an exciting time for WHC with over 530 students in our Specialist Sports Program. However, this also creates complexities around team selection for tournaments and competitions. It is simply not possible for all student-athletes to be selected.

Please understand that although student-athletes are a part of the SSP, this does not guarantee automatic entry to any WHC interschool or representative team. Head coaches are responsible for team selection and any factors contribute to this process, including; skill, ability, team dynamics, effort, behaviour and attendance.

We know that non-selection can be difficult for parent-carers, but we thank you for your understanding and support of our program and all student-athletes, whilst we move in to a heavy phase of competition over the next three terms.

Netball

Its been a busy week in the Specialist Netball Program with SSV competitions commencing for our junior year levels.

We had a successful week as we started our SSV competitions, on Tuesday the Yr 8 Girls undefeated all day dominating and taking out the Grandfinal 35 -12 against Oberon. On Thursday the Yr 7 Girls had a great first SSV outing winning their Grandfinal in a hard physical 11-7 victory over Belmont HS. Both sides head off to Western Metropolitan Region Finals on June 26. Well done  players!!

Players should be commended on their performance and conduct on and off the court proudly representing WHC.

Externally we have had a huge number of players preparing for representative level matches. On Monday the Barwon Junior Netball Competition Grandfinal’s were held where we had Kaycee Taylor winning in the 13&U, Ayisha Bologun winning and in the 17&U we had Frankie Willson from GDFL runner up to Grandfinal winner Lexie Whatley representing GFNL some fantastic matches and results, well done girls.

This competition has been a weekly lead up tournament for the players before this Sundays Association Championships to be held in Wyndham, a key competition in the Netball Victoria High Performance Pathway. We have numerous players across many different Associations participating in the event and we wish them all the best.

Last week we were fortunate to have Elly Bayes a former Australian and Australian Institute of Sport Athlete present a module to our Intermediate and Senior Students the AIS Mental Health and Fitness module. It was a great opportunity to hear Elly’s experiences as an elite athlete and the importance of mental health and strategies to support themselves and each other. It was very timely as we move into our Performance Psychology Workshops over the coming weeks.

A big congratulations to Zara Fereti and Aliyah Lesa for progressing to the final stage of the Victorian SSV 12 Girls Netball Trials. A fantastic effort and we wish you all the best for the upcoming final trial.

Soccer

The SSP Soccer events are well and truly under way with lots of exciting fixtures across the year groups as teams competed in the SSV Barwon & Bellarine Division Lightning Premiership:

This week, the Year 7’s took part in their first competition in the WHC orange, coming away as undefeated champions in both the girls and boys contests.

The year 7 girls put on a convincing display of dominance, topping their opposition 6, 11, and 14-0 to take out the title.

The year 7 boys performed just as strong, finishing top of their pool, and going on to win 8-0 in the final.

The year 8 boys competed later in the week, clinching a 1-0 victory in the final.

Across the board, our teams emulated the passion and pride for our school that we strive to instil within our programme. The hard work everyone has been putting in on the field, in the gym, and in the classroom is paying off!

Well done to all players involved and special mention to students outside of the soccer program lacing up their boots to help out the year 7 girls!
