EREA Camp Meeting

Last Wednesday, representatives from EREA Camps met with sixteen of our students at lunch to introduce themselves and to explain how the EREA camps operate. Our sixteen students will each be assigned a primary student from a disadvantaged background and will engage in a range of activities during the five-day camp being held here at the College during the upcoming holiday break. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to be involved in such a life-changing activity, and we are excited to be involved with EREA Camps.

Vinnies Mini Fair

Last week, during lunch and recess, our Year 10 Service Leaders hosted a range of fair activities to raise funds for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. From Frog in a Pond to Velcro Dart Throw, the students had a fantastic time and showed great support for this worthy cause.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of our students and staff, we raised an impressive $495.

Please continue to send in donations of non-perishable food items and male toiletries, as these are very much needed in the community. Donations can be dropped into the large bins at the entrance to the library, and House points are up for grabs for the House with the most donations.

Year 12 Formal

The Year 12 Formal will be held on Friday 28 June. Students will be shortly assigned an arrival time which will allow each student their moment in the spotlight and a smooth entry process. Arrivals are scheduled for between 6.00 pm and 6.45 pm with everyone to be seated by 7.00 pm for the start of dinner. This is a special night, and we look forward to celebrating this event with our first graduating Year 12 students.

Spirituality Day

On Friday 7 June, all our staff undertook professional development, with the staff from St Francis Flexi Centre, at the Austins Ferry campus. The day is a compulsory day for all employees of Catholic Education Tasmania. Our day’s theme was ‘Questions’. After a rousing game of Catholic Charades to break the ice, the staff examined the “Tweeting with God” app, which contains hundreds of questions relating to religion and Christianity. This enabled us to challenge some of our own beliefs and misconceptions and to examine how the app could be utilised in the classroom. The afternoon session was a panel session based on the “You Can’t Ask That” format. Our panellists were Father Suresh, Brother Peter, and Jo Hart (from EREA), and we thank them for volunteering to participate. Our staff were invited to anonymously submit questions that they had never had the opportunity to ask, and these were presented to the panel, generating rich discussions.

Eddie Mabo Day

During Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), our students watched a range of short videos in their PC groups about issues and challenges facing our First Nation peoples. To conclude this week, every student in the Senior College created a hand for a Sea of Hands to be created on the Principal’s lawn. Unfortunately, the weather was against us, so we hung our hands in the trees in the quad instead. I thank all our students for their engagement in the project.
