Winners from Numeracy Challenge 2:

Congratulations to:

Answer and explanation:

Emily Ding- Year 8

Part 1: 4 painters take 4 days to paint 4 houses 1 painter takes (4x4=)16 days to paint 4 houses 1 painter takes (16/4=)4 days to paint 1 house If 4 painters can paint 4 houses in 4 days, that means each painter contributes equally. Each painter paints 1 house in 4 days. Therefore, if one painter works alone, it will take them 4 days to paint 1 house.

Part 2: 4 painters take 4 days to paint 4 houses 1 painter takes (4x4=)16 days to paint 4 houses 1 painter takes (16/4=)4 days to paint 1 house 6 painters take 8 days to paint 12 houses 6 painters can paint 12 houses in 8 days. This is because each painter can paint a 1/4 of a house per day, so 6 painters together can paint 1 1/2 houses per day. Over 8 days, they would complete 12 houses.

Byron Deng- Year 10

Part 1: 4 painters = 1 house in 1 day 1 painter = 1/4 house in 1 day 1 painter = 1 house in 4 day

Part 2: 4 painters = 1 house in 1 day 6 painters = 1.5 house in 1 day 6 painters = 12 house in 8 day

Luke Whitby- Year 10

Part 1: 4 days assuming that each painter cooperates efficiently and provides 25% of the effort to paint one house in a day, then for one painter to paint one house it would take 4 days assuming they are painting at the same speed. 4 painters = 1 houses in 1 day 1 painter = 1/4 house in 1 day 1 painter = 1 house is 4 days

Part 2: 12 houses If 4 painters paint 4 houses in 4 days, that is a rate of 1 house per day. If it were 6 painters instead of 4 that would be 1.5 houses per day. 4 painters = 1 house per day 6 painters = 1.5 houses per day 1.5 houses x 8 days = 12 houses

Great to see different approaches to the answer.
