Year 7 Science

Our year 7 science students have been busy working through a unit all about separating mixtures this term. We have been exploring the possibility of taking polluted water from a river and purifying it to the point of being able to drink it. This would mean removing dirt, clay, plastics, oil, and all sorts of other pollutants from the water. Some of things are easy to remove, but some not-so-much. Our students have been in the lab every week trialling new separation techniques, including decanting, sieving, filtration, flocculation, distillation, and magnetic separation. They were even the very first year 7 cohort to try out our distillation apparatus! If you see one of our year 7 students, make sure to ask them how they might go about separating the salt out of sea water…

Below are some pictures of 7B students in the lab using a separation funnel to separate oil from water.
