CLASSROOM NEWS!

Term 2 Begins for Prep/1

Well, we have hit the ground running this term! After easing back into the swing of it last week, we have been busy switching back into our routines, ready for a big term of learning and fun! It has been very exciting to welcome two new faces into our classroom this term, Bailey and Josh, who have both settled into our group with ease.

This term in writing we are focusing on developing our creative writing skills by developing our ideas, organising them into a sequential order and using strong, lively vocabulary to express our writers voice. Today we read the story 'The Sloth who Came to Stay' as a mentor text and looked at how the author breaks the story into three parts, the beginning, middle and end. As the weeks progress, and we develop these skills, we are going to write our own stories. We look forward to sharing them with everyone as throughout this learning journey. The photos today show what amazing growth Mrs Lawson's Initialit group are doing with their letter recognition and formation.

In Maths this fortnight, we have been revising our term 1 concepts of number and place value. We will begin to expand upon these skills with the Preps extending their number knowledge beyond 10 and the Grade 1's moving into working with three-digit numbers.

The photo below shows the Grade 1 group creating a number line.

News from the 2/3 Room

Although it's only been a few days since we started back, we're already well into the swing of things in the 2/3 room! After a few adjustments to the room's layout and the addition of a couple of new spiny leaf insect friends, all students have settled in well and are ready to put their best learning into practise for term 2.

In Literacy, we have just begun working on our Reciprocal Reading groups. This activity will have all children in our literacy group working through a chapter book with a partner or group of 3, and will have the students applying comprehension strategies to better understand the text they read, such as predicting and connecting (please ask your child at home to demonstrate their skills when they read!). Students will be working through The 13 Storey Treehouse, Toad Rage, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG.

We have also started a fabulous writing task which will allow students to demonstrate their imaginative writing skills.

In Maths, we are working on multiplicative thinking by working on doubling and halving numbers. We are working on explaining our understandings in multiple different ways, whilst making connections between addition and multiplication, and subtraction and division.

4/5/6 Miss Childs

After a relaxing break and way too much chocolate, we are all excited to be back and ready for lots of fun and learning in Term 2!

In Maths we have been focusing on Time. We have learnt how to read an analogue and digital clock to 5 minute intervals and also started working on 1 minute intervals as well. We have also learnt how to convert time and how to calculate elapsed time. Next we will focus on calendars.

We are off an running with our new book in Literacy; 'His Name Was Walter'. Before we started reading students made wonderful predictions based on the cover and the blurb:

Mollie- "It is giving me Harry Potter vibes...scary with witches and wizards".

Skyla- "I think is is going to be a bit of a mystery".

As well as reading and responding to our group text, we will be delving further into Narratives this term with our writing. We are keeping a writer's notebook  to help us develop our ideas for writing.  We will also learn how to using a range of literary devices to make our writing more interesting, e.g. adding Similes, Onomatopoeia, Personification, etc.
