SciTech Captains

During Term 1 in SciTech students in years 3 and 4 have been learning about the properties seen in different materials. For example some materials can be waterproof like plastic, latex and many more. Some materials can provide protection to sharp objects like leather, canvas and so many others. And some materials are heat proof like bricks, concrete and even ceramics. Students in Years 3 and 4 have also been learning about how quickly or slowly materials break down in water like for example paper can take 2-5 months to break down and a cotton tshirt can take 6 months to break down. However some items can take quite a long time to break down like plastic bags that can take 500 years or more to break down and glass bottles can take a million years to break down. This process is also called biodegradability.

In SciTech the year 5s and 6s are learning about reversible and irreversible changes.

One of the reversible changes they learnt about was the recycling process. They learnt all types of items that can be recycled. Such as hard plastic, cardboard, paper and glass. The 5s and 6s also put a paper clip in salt water which is an irreversible change. The paper clips  rusted and after they have been rusted you can’t change it back to normal. They also made chocolate crackles. Chocolate crackles are rice bubbles mixed with multiple ingredients to make a chocolate looking snack.
