Careers

Hi, I’m Elizabeth Moorby and I am the Careers Adviser here at Boorowa Central.

I’ve been in this role for about 12 months now, but I’ve been a teacher at Boorowa Central since 2019, when I began my career as an early career teacher in Science. Interestingly, teaching wasn’t my first choice of career — in fact, it wasn’t my second or third either!

A little bit about me: I grew up on a farm near Rye Park and attended Boorowa Central School from Kindergarten through to Year 12. After finishing school, I begin tertiary education and studied a Bachelor of Applied Science (Forensic Science). However, I soon realised that the police force wasn’t the right career path for me.

I then studied a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) at the University of Newcastle but eventually decided on a complete career change. I completed a Master of Education (Secondary Teaching) through Australian Catholic University in Canberra.

Last year, I decided to apply for the Careers Adviser role, because while I was the Senior Adviser, I found that I really enjoyed helping senior students apply for university, scholarships, and post-school jobs. I'm excited to continue supporting students as they explore their future pathways and make informed decisions about life beyond school.

Student looking to meet with me can find me in the AMPS staffroom, but if I am not there they can leave their name in the Careers book located outside the door.

Pathways to University: SRS, ATAR, and More

For students considering university, there are a few key pathways to be aware of:

  • ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank): A rank that reflects a student’s overall academic achievement and is used for university admissions. This is calculated by Univeriosties Admissions Centre (UAC).
  • SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme): An early entry program through UAC that allows universities to consider a student’s school performance and recommendation, rather than waiting on their final HSC results.
  • Direct Entry Programs: Some universities offer their own early entry schemes based on interviews, portfolios, or school reports.
