Principal's Address

Year 3 NAPLAN

Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat NAPLAN over the past 2 weeks. The results of these assessments will be shared with schools and parents later this year. The results will show how your child has performed in each assessment and compare this to the school’s average and the state average. It is important to remember that these assessments are a snap shot in time and may not be a highly accurate assessment of their overall academic abilities. Influences such as the mind set of the student, sleep, breakfast and issues with technology can all impact on a students results.

Unfortunately, there were technological issues which impacted on the Year 3 Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy assessments despite efforts from staff to change locations and devices. The school has requested support from NAPLAN to determine remedial actions moving forward.

Boorowa Country Education Foundation

Boorowa Central School hosted a ‘wear you boots to school’ day and Boot Toss on Tuesday to raise funds for the Boorowa Country Education Foundation. This foundation has supported many school leavers and young people in Boorowa pay for the additional costs associated with higher education and apprenticeships. It is an excellent cause and one our school supports as much as possible.

Thank you to the Boorowa Country Education Foundation for the work they do in supporting our young adults.

School Tours

This week Boorowa Central School hosted its first tours for the year. These tours are for prospective 2026 Kindergarten students, and their parents. These tours are led by our Primary Captains as they take our families on a tour of the school whilst exploring the ‘treasure map’ with our youngest visitor, adding stickers to the places they visited. I also accompanied the tours and gave background information about the school whilst we enjoyed a walk around the school and a chat over the provided lunch.

If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten in 2026, please contact the school to arrange your tour. We have 3 timeslots available next week - Monday 12pm, Tuesday 12pm, Thursday 12pm.

All are welcome.

Compass Reports

For the past 2 years, Boorowa Central School has been sending secondary reports home to parents via Compass. Parents are able to view these reports on a device and discuss the contents with their children when it suits them.

The school will be moving to digital reports for Infants and Primary also for the upcoming Semester 1 reporting cycle. Prior to their release, I will send instructions regarding how to access these reports.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.

Social Media

In recent weeks, the school has been dealing with issues arising from social media use by students and community members. Platforms such as Facebook are a great way to communicate positive messages, meet like-minded people, share ideas and to stay connected with others. These are positive outcomes of social media use and have the potential to influence others and self positively. Our school uses its Facebook page to showcase the great things that our students and staff are doing at school each day.

However, social media can also be used in negative ways. This negative use can have a detrimental impact on those who the message is aimed at, their family and friends and those who read the post in the wider community. This negative use of social media has a significant impact on our school community and the wider community.

How we as adults use our social media, directly influences how our children engage with their social media, when they have access to it. Not just the time we spend on our phones using social media, but also how we conduct ourselves in public forums such as on the Boorowa Noticeboard on Facebook.

As a school, we are not responsible for how students use their social media, this is a parent’s responsibility. However, the school is often required to manage the impact of social media because these issues are brought into the school. This is unavoidable and becoming more common.

Management of social media bullying, harassment or inappropriate use is the responsibility of the police to manage. If ever your child is targeted, save evidence of this harassment and take it to the police to make a report.

As a parent body, school and as a wider community, we can all model positive social media usage so that we can show our children what healthy and appropriate use of social media looks like. This will help teach our children how they can engage positively with their social media and use this connectivity to build their own self-esteem and to positively contribute to the self-esteem of those around them. This would be a great outcome for everyone.
