Highlights from Heights Campus

We’ve had a busy and exciting couple of weeks in the Junior Learning Centre  (JLC)! Our students have been working hard across all areas of their learning, our FLC students in particular have been involved in some wonderful activities.

As part of our literacy program, students have been developing their reading and collaborative skills by working in small groups to complete a variety of activities designed to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of texts. Reading group activities have included opportunities for:

  • Developing vocabulary & comprehension skills by using iPads to find the meaning of unfamiliar words;
  • Playing word bingo to develop sight word recognition;
  • Sorting words and pictures by their beginning sounds to strengthen  decoding skills;
  • Using whiteboards to record thoughts about the texts students are reading.

It’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and progress as our students grow increasingly more confident in their reading.

In Mathematics, the focus has been on subtraction. Students have been learning to solve subtraction problems using different strategies, and they’ve been diligently recording their work in their Maths books. It’s been great to see them apply their knowledge in practical ways and building a strong foundation in this essential skill.

During our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions, students have been using the Zones of Regulation to identify and talk about their emotions.

They’ve been learning how to express their feelings and communicate with others in a positive way. To make this learning even more engaging, students made chatter boxes, which they’ve been using to talk to their friends about how they’re feeling. This has been a fun and effective way for students to connect and support each other.

A recent highlight for our Foundation students was the special Father’s Day event. Last Friday, they invited their fathers or another special person into the classroom to participate in some fun activities together. The giant bowling and board games were a big hit, but the star of the morning was the paper plane challenge! We discovered some very talented plane designers among our students and fathers!!

It was wonderful to see everyone having such a great time.

We’re so proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm our students have shown. It’s certainly been a fantastic term, filled with learning, growth, and lots of fun!
