Art News
Over the past few weeks, students in Art have completed a series of formative lessons based on the Elements of Art, consolidating this by creating their own collage artworks. They have now finished the theoretical unit, Ideas and Meanings, where they analysed how artists convey ideas and meanings by deliberately using art elements and subject matter.
Students have recently embarked on their major Key Learning Task for the semester. This task involves presenting a portfolio of ideas and practice, along with two finished artworks: a perspective drawing using graphite to hone technical drawing skills, and an aerial view artwork where students will use watercolor and markers to represent a place of personal significance.
Stay tuned for the next newsletter to see some of the impressive work students will produce in the coming weeks!
SEE – Sculpture Class
This term, 7G and 7A have participated in the SEE Sculpture class, with 7B and 7C scheduled to take part in Term 4. In Semester 1, Yarrabing Secondary College has successfully sourced materials and set up the kiln, enabling students to create ceramic sculptures and pottery using real clay that is fired in the kiln.
While the current SEE Sculpture class runs only once a week, students have had the opportunity to explore hand-building techniques with clay and create their own pieces. Some students have really enjoyed this process and have attended art club to complete their work to a high standard. Currently, students are finishing their work using the ‘cold finish’ technique, which results in a decorative piece not suitable for eating or drinking. Such pieces are mainly for decorative use or as pot plants.
We are excited to announce that next year, Year 8 art students will be introduced to glazing techniques as part of a dedicated term on ceramics in the visual arts curriculum. This type of finish will make the ceramics food-grade.
