Taming screentime and social media use

Being socially connected is important and social media is one way that we can connect with others. Although it is convenient, fun and easy, it does come with risks of screen addiction and disconnection from the real world.  Excessive screen time can also cause dry eyes, sleep disturbance, neck and back pain, and increase mental health concerns like anxiety.

Its important to know how to properly manage our overall screen time.

Here are 5 considerations to make:

  1. Spend at least 3 hours per day on a screen-free hobby. Pick something that gives a solid break from the screen, such as reading a book, going for a walk, engaging in an extra-curricular activity eg. Sports, talking to friends and family face to face, or walking the dog
  2. Enjoy phone-free meal times
  3. Turn off notifications before going to bed. Do this at least half an hour before hand
  4. Keep bedrooms as screen-free zones
  5. Eliminate mindless scrolling in the evening. The blue light can interrupt your sleeping hormones and keep you awake.
