Congratulations to the MCA Musicians and Music staff who participated in the Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival over the Ekka break. With over 14,000 student performers from across Australia, QCMF is one of the biggest music festivals in the Southern Hemisphere. It was great to see Marist Ashgrove once again being the only Catholic School competing in each of the top A grade sections for Choral, Strings, Wind Band, Guitar Orchestra and Symphony. This is a testament to the depth and quality of the boys’ standard of performance here at the College. Congratulations to Chamber Strings, Big Band 1, Guitar Orchestra 1, Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir who all received a gold award, and to Performance Choir, Wind Orchestra 1 and Percussion Ensembles 1 and 2 who were awarded silver. Finally, a special mention to Liam Bourke (Oboe) and Baxter Jordan (Bass) who both were awarded certificates for excellence.
The annual Marist College Ashgrove Battle of the Bands returned to its home of twenty years at the John Eales Grandstand on what was a spectacular Brisbane Winter day. This year’s event featured a high standard of performances showcasing some great original music and covers. Marist Old Boys, Zac Carr, Alex Smith, Jeremy Sankey from local Brisbane Band “Special Features” judged this year’s event and were very impressed with all of the 2024 entries. Tying in Third Place were Year 11 band ‘The Tallows’ – Tom Mellare, Max James and Kalan Schnaubelt and Year 10 band ‘Servo Muffin’ – Hayden Gane, Ethan Bell, Patrick Bach, Oliver Bishop and Will Bennett. Second Place was awarded to Year 9 band ‘Burnaway’ – Baxter Jordan, Harrison Hind, Luke Dwyer who gave a spirited and high energy performance. A deserving First Place went to Year 11 band ‘The Waiting List’ – Max Hammond, Ben Gibson, Christian Weston-Kelly, Ambrose Gonzalez, Addi Allen. Congratulations to all involved.
2024 has seen several performance opportunities for students involved in the College’s DJ/Electronic Music Instrumental Music Program. One of the highlights has been the recent Years 5 and 6 and Years 7 and 8 College Dances, held in Week 6, Term 3. All DJ students were invited to perform at the event, with a great selection of dance hits, including some great retro throwbacks and remixes! A handful of beginner Year 7 and 8 students who stepped up to contribute to the night’s music are to be commended on their efforts - a huge thanks to all the boys involved.

Please join the Year 7 drama boys as they present the world premiere of their new short film, 'The Exam’. Its exam block and the dreaded maths exam is upon them. Everyone went in thinking they didn't have to study. The exam is ridiculously hard, how will they pass and why do strange things keep happening? Is it possible to pass a Maths test using a D and D dice, a giant eraser and a band aid?
