Primary School News

Mr Michael Connolly, Head of Primary School

Dear Primary Parents,

Welcome back from an extended break over the Ekka period. I hope the boys are ready to put their best foot forward over the next four weeks and they are focused on doing their best in the classroom and in the extra-curricular activities they are involved in. Over the past three weeks, I have been interviewing boys and parents who wish to attend our Primary School in 2026. During these interviews, I often talk about the need for boys to do their best. I explain that they don't necessarily need to be the best at anything, but it is essential that they try their best at whatever it is they are attempting.  For our boys, it is important that they do not waste any opportunity to demonstrate their best during the remainder of this term. I will stress this with our boys at our Wellness Week assembly on Tuesday morning. Your support in reinforcing this message with your sons would be greatly appreciated.

Every ten years, we take a whole school photo of the boys and staff in our Primary School. We are due to take this special photo again this year, so we are planning to take this at 9:00am next Tuesday the 27th of August. Please ensure that your son is dressed in full Winter uniform and is well groomed for this photo. I look forward to seeing all the Primary School represented on this special occasion.

On our pupil-free day next Friday, we will be hosting our Year 5, 2025 students for an Orientation Day here in the Primary School. I will be asking that our current Year 5 students bring their laptops and their chargers to school next Thursday so that our visitors can use them for the morning. Also on this same day next week, our Year 6 boys will be attending their Year 7, 2025 Orientation Day in the Secondary School. I hope all the boys enjoy their time during this important day in their Marist journey.

Enjoy the remainder of Week 7.

Primary Pastoral Leader – Anthony Graham

Our recent pastoral initiative, "Gold Medal Moments," has been a wonderful success, with boys across Year 5 and Year 6 being recognised for consistently doing the right thing, simply because it is the right thing to do. It has been incredibly heartening to see our students being acknowledged not only by their classroom teachers but also by teachers on duty and specialist teachers. These moments of recognition highlight the importance of the little things—following instructions, paying attention, and maintaining positive interactions—that contribute significantly to the fabric of our Marist community.

Earlier this term, we also celebrated a Pastoral Breakfast with 60 boys from Year 5 and Year 6. These boys were recognised by their classroom teachers as the steady pillars of their classrooms—those who follow instructions, pay attention, and bring a positive attitude to every interaction with their teachers and peers. Recognising these students for their incredible work and their ability to make a lasting impact within the Marist community is crucial. The breakfast served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of acknowledging those who quietly and consistently contribute to the positive culture of our school.

This week, we are also celebrating Wellness Week! Week 7 offers us the perfect opportunity to pause, take a breath, and focus on our mental and physical well-being. Mrs Rounds and Ms Brown in the library have organised daily activities for our students, ensuring that everyone has the chance to engage in wellness practices. As part of our celebrations, we will hold our primary morning assembly in the grandstand on Tuesday, allowing us to enjoy the benefits of the sun and fresh air. This initiative complements our ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy environment for all our students.

Progressive Reporting

Over the course of the term, teachers have released grades and feedback for students and parents regarding assessments completed to date. This is released approximately 10 school days after assessments have been completed to provide time for teachers to mark, grade and moderate. It is important that students are actively invested in checking their grades and feedback to inform future progress. Next term, I will work with students on calculating their GPA. This is their way of tracking their progress regarding their own learning. Please see the instructions below for accessing these results:
