First XIII Rugby League

The Saints First XIII travelled to Townsville to play the Semi-Final of the Aaron Payne Cup in the curtain raiser to the Cowboys vs Broncos NRL clash at Queensland Country Bank stadium. Coming off a strong finish to the regular season, the boys came up against a strong Kirwan squad. The boys started strong, Sam Jonsen scoring the first try within two minutes, jumping onto a kick from Jesse Ziegler to take a 6-0 lead. Saints maintained the pressure on Kirwan before Kirwan wrestled momentum back to take an 18-6 lead into half time. Saints had a hot start to the second half with Cayde Miller scoring off a well-timed short ball from Lucas Russell, taking the score to 18-10. Kirwan’s strike power proved too much to overcome during the whole 60 minutes as they scored late tries to take the score out to 38-10. Well done to Mr O’Farrell and his team on a successful season.

Congratulations to First XIII captain, Jack Rix and First XIII back and U15s captain, Xavier Lallemand on being named in their respective teams of the tournament and to Noah Dowdle who received the Lionel Williamson Award for player of the year. Thanks to Mr O’Farrell for the time and effort that you have put into training the squad this season.

Cricket

St Augustine’s Intermediate and Senior Cricket teams competed in the North Queensland finals of the Streetsmarts Cricket competition during Week 7.

Saints First XI team took on Ignatius Park who batted first, setting a target of 112 runs. St Augustine's bowlers delivered a strong performance, with standout contributions from Thomas King (2/16 off 4 overs), Seth McGinty (2/10 off 3 overs), Patrick Spillane (2/16 off 2 overs), Archie Ferguson (1/18 off 3 overs), Charlie Lawrence (1/9 off 1 over), and Ryan Scarborough (1/11 off 1 over).

In response, Saints were bowled out for 104 in the 18th over. Notable efforts with the bat came from Seth McGinty, who scored 39 runs, and Harry Halpin, who added 26.

With this match, the 2024 campaign cam to an end. Thank you to our Year 12 players—Seth McGinty, Harry Halpin, and Henry King—for their invaluable contributions to the team.

Saints Intermediate team put up an impressive total of 3/159, with Samson Pittorino leading the charge with a stellar 79, supported by Ian De Lange’s 20. In response, the opposition crumbled, all out for just 44 runs. Xavier Curtain delivered a standout bowling performance, taking 3/7, while Ashton Salerno contributed with 2/3.

Congratulations to the boys on their victory! Saints will now face the winner of Rockhampton and Wide Bay at the QLD state finals in Brisbane next week. Good Boys!
