Goodness in Action
‘Taking action’ is an important element in all IB programs. In the PYP, action is both an application of learning and an opportunity for students to engage in a form of contribution or service. In the PYP teachers actively promote, model and guide students into taking action to solve problems and make a positive difference to the world. The fruit of the Spirit ‘goodness’ and action in the PYP emphasise the importance of community and compassion.
At Good News Lutheran College many of our students are motivated and inspired to take action. Here are some of their stories:
In Year 4 we have focused on building a deep understanding of our shared history and the need for reconciliation. Students were invited to create their own Acknowledgement of Country as well as complete a personal heart with a pledge stating how they can contribute to reconciliation.
I make posters about the environment and tell others how it needs our help. To make the world a better place we need to protect animals and stop them from getting extinct. We all need each other – humans, plants and animals – to survive. I want people to see my posters and start talking about ways we can help the environment before it gets worse.
I take action like this because I went to Healesville Zoo and learnt about the spotted quoll. I was upset that it was endangered, and I realised I don’t want to lose any more beautiful animals in the world.

I love taking action because it can help people understanding the importance of caring for the environment and having more fresh air and less pollution. I made a poster to show people how they can compost to help the environment. I also wanted to share my knowledge on pollination.

When we were learning about the meaning of reconciliation (working with others for a more harmonious future) we looked at a website that had a unity circle. This inspired us to create a poster to share with others that explained what unity means. We had to use research skills to find information and then write it down in our own words, so we didn’t copy from others. We hope our poster will inform and inspire others to make good changes in the world like, stopping racism and understanding the need for unity.

Today I represented GNLC and met with the Mayor at the Wyndham City Council rooms. I shared ideas on our vision for the community and how to make improvements over the next four years. I also participate in many sports that improve my well-being. Being active and working hard is a lifestyle choice. When I share my accomplishments with others it can motivate them to participate and set personal goals like I do.
