Happiness is one of the Biblical ‘fruits of the spirit’, but it is also a very human emotion and feeling. However, it is unrealistic to be happy all the time. All people will go through ebbs and flows of feelings as a result of daily life. When people are regularly unhappy or continually depressed, we know that this is not an ideal state to be in. That is where we may need assistance from others to help reflect on these feelings and uncover any issues. At Good News the College, values of Grace, Respect, Integrity and Courage underpin all that we think and do. We encourage our students to live out these values. As they do this, they realise that they are outward looking, focussing on how they treat and interact with others in the College community. When we can embrace these values as ways we help and work alongside others it can result in feelings of inclusion, thankfulness and joy. A by-product of this is happiness. This is called the eudaimonic approach.
It is important to teach and model to our students that lasting happiness does not necessarily come through material possessions, our own performance or knowledge as these things can be fleeting. When we strive for meaning, using our strengths to contribute to something greater than ourselves and positively interact with others then we are grounded in values.
At GNLC, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme actively promote this approach. We also know that student learning and growth is important in a child's perception of themselves and feelings of happiness.
