Book Week Celebration: A Journey with Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy

Book Week at Good News Lutheran College was a resounding success, filled with the magic of stories and the joy of reading.

One of the standout moments of the week for me was reading the children’s classic, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd to our Mambourin students. This charming tale of the mischievous little dog and his adventures captured the hearts of the students, sparking imagination and laughter. The book’s themes of friendship, bravery, and curiosity resonated with the students. My copy of this book is well worn as it was a household favourite for my boys over 20 years ago.

The highlight of the week for me was the Book Week parade, where students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters. I also loved hearing the story of 'Change' written by our very own GNLC author, Lara Ronalds. It contains some very significant messages for children and adults so I would highly recommend a read!

Book Week is always a cherished tradition at our school, and this year was no exception. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by our students were truly inspiring, and it was heartwarming to see the students engage in the activities and how much they appreciate all they can learn from reading. I had never seen a Book Vending Machine before and so having one available at school this week was a special treat.

Every day at GNLC, our students hear or read messages from a very special book, the Bible. In fact, it is from Proverbs 18:15: that we are encouraged to learn; "An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge." What better way to acquire knowledge than through reading!

A special thank you to all the parents, teachers, and staff who contributed to making Book Week a memorable and enriching experience. Let’s continue to nurture our students’ love for books, ensuring that every child feels the joy and wonder that reading brings.
