KLA: Science

Year 7 & 8

In Year 7 and 8 students cover the following branches of Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Year 7 covers the topics of Science Is…, States of matter, Separating mixtures, Classification, Ecosystems and The Einstein Project. Year 8 covers the topics of Cells, Energy transformations, Elements and compounds, Physical and Chemical changes, Body systems and the Rock cycle. Students across both year levels make accurate measurements in experiments to analyse relationships between variables and explore and explain these relationships in the form of practical reports. They make predictions and propose explanations, drawing on evidence to support their views. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Science Competitions and Science Week throughout the year.

Students in Year 7 also participate in STEM, where they explore the thinking process, gain critical thinking skills and participate in teamwork building skills.

Year 9 & 10

In Year 9 and 10 Science students cover the following branches of Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology.

Year 9 covers the topics of Microbiology, Heat transfer, Inside the Atom, Chemical reactions and Control and co-ordination. Year 9 students also have the opportunity to pick the electives of Forensic Science and Biotechnology. Forensics allows the students to learn the skills and techniques involved in solving a crime, can meet experts in the field and experience going on an excursion around Melbourne to explore historical crime spots. Biotechnology allows students to explore modern scientific techniques, ethical issues in science and design techniques.

Year 10 students have the option of picking two electives of Biochemistry, Biological Psychology, Earth and Space Science and Physical Science.

Students across both year levels make accurate measurements in experiments to analyse relationships between variables and explore and explain these relationships in the form of practical reports. They make predictions and propose explanations, drawing on evidence to support their views. Students have the opportunity to participate in Science Competitions and Science Week throughout the year.

VCE

VCE Science is offered to the students in the following units:

Biology Units 1 - 4

Chemistry Units 1 - 4

Environmental Science Units 1 - 4

Physics Units 1 - 4

Psychology Units 1 - 4

Each unit covers specific content contained in areas of study and is designed to enable students to achieve a set of outcomes for that unit. Each outcome is described in terms of key knowledge and key skills. Students in all VCE sciences will cover a range of different assessments, including ethics in science, data analysis, analysing case studies and practical experiments. Students have the opportunity to participate in Science Competitions and Science Week throughout the year.
