Key Learning Area Leader

Role Description

General Role Statement

Provide educational leadership in the planning and development, implementation and evaluation of programs in a Learning Area in accordance with the Victorian Curriculum.

 

Specific Tasks

1. Implement Victorian Curriculum and College Strategic Plan, through the development and embedding of both short and long-term strategies in accordance with this Key Learning Area.

 

2. Develop an effective high performing team by:

  • ensuring open communication between all members of the learning area
  • considering needs and viewpoints of all members of the learning area
  • promoting mutual respect and understanding.

3. Be responsible for the preparation of all documentation required by the College or DE&T

  • 3.1 Annual evaluation
  • 3.2 Program Budget submission and support other coordinators within the Learning Area
  • 3.3 Data required for the College Annual Report or College Reviews

4. Be responsible for:

  • Ensuring all Curriculum is well documented, with support materials and is available on the school network to all teaching staff.
  • The ordering, maintaining and annual stocktake of learning area resources;
  • Checking program finance reports and monitoring expenditure.
  • Collaborating regularly with staff to assist in the development of programmes that demonstrate best practice and are engaging to students.
  • Ensuring the programmes delivery meets the College’s expectations in regard to MAPS (the College’s Teaching and Learning Model) and ‘HITS’ (DE&Ts High Impact Teaching Strategies).

5. Oversee excursion/special activities plan for the Assistant Principal at the start of each semester. Ensure that all members of the learning area are familiar with College policy regarding activities and excursions.

 

6. Oversee the book lists for class set purchases and other recommendations to the Library.

 

7. Ensure that regular KLA meetings are held as per the schedule published by the Assistant Principal and provide the Curriculum Manager with a copy of the minutes of these meetings.

 

The purpose of these meetings is to:

  • provide collegial support for all members of the area;
  • ascertain the needs of learning area members, e.g. in terms of equipment;
  • discuss College policy, Strategic Plan goals and priorities and strategies being used in the KLA to achieve these goals and priorities;
  • ascertain problems and concerns of learning area members and recommend strategies to deal with these issues.
  • provide an opportunity for sharing of information from professional development activities;
  • provide an opportunity for professional development activities.

8. Liaise with the Principal Class team on matters affecting the learning area including subject, staff and room allocation.

 

9. Attend scheduled Curriculum Coordinators/KLA Leader Meetings to discuss and advise on matters affecting the whole College program.

 

10. Oversee the publicity and promotion of KLA programs and student achievement both within the College and the wider community.

 

11. Key Learning Area Leaders are responsible for the overview and supervision of staff within the learning area. This includes to:

  • Ensure that the documented Victorian Curriculum is taught.
  • Ensure that the documented Curriculum; Course Outlines and Unit Plans are complete and available electronically (on Compass)
  • Monitor the teaching of curriculum content
  • Ensure consistent delivery of the Victorian Curriculum to all students across all levels.
  • Ensure consistency of assessment across the Learning Area: homework, assignments, tests etc.
  • Ensure consistency of reports and reporting practice in the Learning Area
  • Actively encourage peer observation to encourage better teaching practice.
  • Monitor the implementation of MAPS across the Learning Area to ensure consistency
  • Make available suitable work for students when staff are absent, and ensure support Casual Relief Teachers in the area
  • Liaise with the Senior School Team regarding VCE operational matters such as authentication and consideration of disadvantage.
  • Liaise with the Leadership Team regarding possible co-curricular opportunities.
  • Encourage a sense of shared practice within teaching teams, help develop teaching strategies and implement curriculum that enhances learning outcomes for girls and boys in the Junior and Senior School.
  • Work with the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and Integration staff to help subject teachers meet the special learning needs of students.
  • To support Key Learning Area staff to be conversant with strategies in both differentiating and modifying work and to assist teachers preparing work for students with special needs.
  • To work with the EAL teacher to support access to the EAL curriculum.
  • To be involved in the presentation of Professional Development for staff when required.

12. Undertake specific tasks, related to the learning area, as determined after consultation with the Principal.
