PIVOT in Practice

Why Pivot Matters at NSC

At Norwood Secondary, we use Pivot as a vital tool to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across our school. Pivot empowers our teachers and leaders to reflect on their practice through student feedback, set meaningful goals, and foster an environment of continual growth and improvement.

How Pivot Works

Pivot surveys are delivered twice per semester in distinct cycles:

  1. Early Semester Survey: Conducted at the start of the semester to capture students’ initial feedback on their learning experience.
  2. Post-Semester Survey: Delivered near the end of the semester to evaluate progress, growth, and the effectiveness of changes implemented during the term.

These surveys are aligned with global teaching frameworks and based on best-practice research, making them reliable and evidence-based tools to drive improvement.

From Insight to Action: Using Pivot at Norwood

The Pivot survey is not just a feedback tool—it’s a foundation for actionable change. After receiving the early-semester survey results, teachers use the insights to:

  • Set Individual Teaching Goals: Teachers reflect on the data to identify areas for growth and create targeted goals to improve their teaching practice. These goals might focus on specific feedback domains, such as classroom engagement, clarity of instruction, or fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Collaborate in KLAs: Within Key Learning Areas (KLAs), teams analyse common trends from the survey data. This collaboration helps identify broader areas for improvement and allows staff to develop shared strategies to address challenges.
  • Engage in Professional Learning (PL): To support growth, staff can:
    • Attend Professional Learning sessions focused on specific areas of need, offering tailored strategies and techniques to address weaknesses.
    • Utilize Pivot’s Online Resources, which include evidence-based tools, guides, and templates that can be applied in classrooms immediately.

Key Features of Pivot

  • Individual & Confidential: Pivot surveys provide confidential feedback, creating a safe space for honest reflection and personal growth.
  • Customisable & Growth-Oriented: The survey can be tailored to include additional domains or questions that align with our school’s specific goals. Reports are supported by evidence-based resources for immediate and practical application.
  • Ongoing Support & Coaching: Pivot coaches and support teams are readily available to assist staff in interpreting their data and creating actionable improvement plans.
