Numeracy
Goals and Three-Year Plan
CONTEXT:
Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need in order to use numbers, data, problem solving and spatial awareness in a wide range of situations. It involves recognising and understanding the role of numbers in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.
Being numerate involves more than mastering basic mathematics. Numeracy involves connecting number skills that students learn at school with the out-of-school situations that require the skills of problem solving, critical judgement, and sense-making related to applied contexts.
Achieving excellence and equity in literacy and numeracy is at the forefront of the Education State agenda and at the centre of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy. The state plan is to improve literacy and numeracy for every student, in every classroom, in every government school, by building on the excellent work already taking place across schools.
