Purpose
At Norwood Secondary College, homework and assessment is essential to our teaching and learning programs. The purpose of the Late Submission of Work Policy is to outline the process for submitting work and to establish consistent protocols. This policy applies to students in all year levels and to staff responsible for assessing student work.
Protocols – Staff Implementation
Students are expected to consolidate their understanding of curriculum and to further develop their knowledge in each subject area by completing homework and/or assessment tasks. This plays an important role in reinforcing concepts introduced in class and plays a significant role in building work ethic, self-discipline and responsibility. Norwood Secondary College Teaching Staff will exercise discretion when assigning and collecting tasks. Homework and/or assessment tasks assigned across the different learning areas will be coordinated by Subject Team Leaders, KLA Leaders, Year Level Coordinators and Heads of Year Level to prevent unreasonable workloads for students.
Years 7 to 12
- It is the responsibility of the student to submit all homework and assessment tasks by the due date. Students are encouraged to refer to Compass to keep track of all Learning Tasks to ensure they meet the relevant deadlines.
- Teachers will communicate deadlines to students and parents via Compass Learning Tasks. Staff may choose to distribute additional information to students as a hard copy; however, Compass is the primary mode of communication. Teachers will give students sufficient time in class to record due dates. At Years 7 and 8, tasks will be recorded on the Whiteboard in their homeroom where practical, from when the task has been set up until its due date.
- All work must be submitted to the classroom teacher. In the event that a teacher is absent, the work may be given to the replacement teacher. Students can submit work to teachers at their relevant staffrooms during recess and lunchtimes. In the case of VCE folio subjects, student folio work must be signed in by both the students and classroom teacher for authentication purposes.
Staff at Norwood Secondary College understand that meeting deadlines can be difficult for students if they have had extended absences or illness. In the event that a student requires an extension, the student must provide an explanation at least 24 hours before the submission deadline. If the student is absent on the day the work is due, then the task must be submitted as soon as they return. It is the responsibility of the student to seek out their teacher if a class is not scheduled on the day that they return. An extension will only be granted in the case of illness, school approved absences and exceptional circumstances. Work, sporting and other commitments both inside and outside of school are not sufficient reasons for extension. Year Level Coordinators, Heads of Year Level and Wellbeing may grant extensions in extenuating circumstances; however, this will be communicated with the relevant staff member(s).
For work submitted after the due date, students will incur a penalty of 10 % for each school day that the work is late. If students submit the work after 5 days, they are still eligible to receive an ‘S’ for the task.
- In the case of VCE School Assessed Coursework (SACs/SATs), a minimum of one week’s notice must be provided to students as per VCAA guidelines and students must be given the relevant SAC notification with due dates clearly communicated. Students who submit work late or are absent on the day of a SAC without a medical certificate, will receive a zero.
- Parents/Guardians will be advised of late work via the Learning Task set date on Compass. Late work will be followed up with a Letter of Concern and students will be entered into a mandatory Redemption Session which will run each Wednesday from 3.00pm-4.00pm for students in Years 7-10. This session will be supervised by Year level leaders with the support of our Classroom Teachers and Tutors. *Students may also attend Homework Club which runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays (3.10pm – 4.15pm) to seek additional support.
- If a student fails to meet deadlines/submit work on a regular basis with a subject, the classroom teacher should make contact with parents/guardians and inform staff in the relevant sub school. If a student is not submitting work on time across multiple subjects, parents will be called to the school for a meeting with the Year Level Coordinator and/or Head of Year Level and further action may be taken.
Staff/Student and Parent Responsibilities
Assessment tasks and homework is a shared responsibility between the school, teachers, students and their parents/guardians. In order to get the most out of homework and assessment, it is important that everyone understands their obligations and responsibilities.
Norwood Secondary College Staff will:
- advise parents/carers of expectations at the beginning of the school year and provide them with a copy of the late submission of work policy
- ensure students record important deadlines
- give students enough time to complete homework and assessment tasks, considering home obligations and extracurricular activities
- assess work and provide timely and practical feedback and support
- help students develop organisational and time-management skills
- ensure parents/carers are aware of the school's late submission of work policy
It is expected that students will take responsibility for their own learning by:
- being aware of the school’s late submission of work policy
- accepting responsibility for the completion of homework and assessment tasks within set time frames
- seeking assistance when difficulties arise
- organising their time to manage home obligations, participation in physical activity and sports, recreational and cultural activities and part-time employment
It is expected that parents/carers will support their children by:
- developing a positive and productive approach to homework and assessment
- ensuring there is a balance between the time spent on homework and recreational activities
- talking to teachers about any concerns they have about the homework and/or assessment
- ensuring students keep a record of all homework and assessment tasks
- ensuring there is a quiet study area for students to complete their homework tasks
- checking Compass Learning Tasks for upcoming assessment
