Curriculum Committee

Purpose, Roles and Protocols

Purpose: The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to guarantee a rich and thorough curriculum and assessment that students can access and be challenged by with a specific focus on consistency and stimulating learning to improve whole school student outcomes.

 

Structure: Assistant Principal, Director of Curriculum, Director of Pedagogy, English KLA Leader, Mathematics KLA Leader, Humanities KLA Leader, Science KLA Leader, PE & Health KLA Leader, Technology KLA Leader, Arts KLA Leader

 

Role of Members:

  • Lead and contribute to high level planning of whole-school curriculum improvement initiatives
  • Engage in a process of ongoing evaluation, review and reflection of current curriculum initiatives through an evidence and solutions based approach
  • Have a focus on learning for all students and a student-centred approach to all curriculum discussions
  • Facilitate innovation to drive curriculum changes for improvement
  • Liaise with Subject Coordinators within KLA on all important initiatives from the Curriculum Committee
  • Take in account current research on teaching practices and learning strategies in all discussions
  • Analyse student learning data for the purpose of improving student learning outcomes and instructional practices
  • Provide expert knowledge on specific KLA areas to assist in curriculum discussions
  • Oversee the ongoing development, documentation and review of curriculum
  • Align the work at Norwood with VCAA guidelines (Victorian Curriculum and VCE)
  • Model quality teaching and assessment practices
  • Provide professional and visible leadership through example and keeping abreast of educational issues and developments
  • Communicate regularly with staff to ensure a consistent approach to curriculum
  • Promote a collaborative culture and collective effort to support student learning

Meeting Protocols:

  • We all participate and contribute - everyone is given an opportunity to voice their opinions
  • We use improvement tools that enhance meeting efficiency and effectiveness
  • We actively listen to what others have to say, seeking first to understand, then to be understood
  • We model respectful behaviours in regards to the diversity of opinions
  • We follow-up on the actions we are assigned responsibility for and complete them within an agreed time frame
  • We give and receive open and honest feedback in a constructive manner
  • We use data to make decisions (whenever possible)
  • We strive to continually improve our meeting process and build time into each agenda for reflection
  • We communicate any meeting apologies for absences to the chair of the Curriculum Committee
  • We use an agenda with visible goals and a clear outcome for the meeting and are able to reflect on our progress towards these goals at the conclusion of the meeting
