Legends Band Shines at ANBOC
On July 6, during the school holidays, the Legends Band had the incredible opportunity to perform at the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference (ANBOC) held at Carey Baptist Grammar in Kew. This conference, a biennial event for music educators from across the country, is only hosted in Victoria once a decade. We were proud to be the sole government school from Victoria selected to perform.
The Legends Band participated in three sessions during the conference. They were the demonstration ensemble for two presentations and shared the stage in a concert with the Royal Australian Air Force Band.
The first session featured my presentation, “Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better: How to Make Your Small Band Sound Great!” Following that, Dr. Sue Arney led a session titled “25 Tips for Working with Young Ensembles.”
In addition to these sessions, we had the distinct pleasure of working with Tim Ferrier, the composer of our piece “Sail by the Stars.” Tim conducted the band through his composition and was so impressed that he gifted us with another piece of music to bring back to school.
The evening concert saw the Legends Band open for the Royal Australian Air Force Band. Despite the nerves of performing before an auditorium full of music educators and the composer himself, the Legends Band delivered a performance filled with energy and precision. Their set concluded to resounding applause from the audience, a testament to their hard work and talent.
I want to extend my gratitude to the staff who assisted me on the day to provide this extraordinary opportunity for our students —Viv Doolan, Kerry Davies, and Yasmin Penrose.
