Pathways for everyone
The Year 12 students have been thinking carefully about their pathways in 2025, as tertiary applications through VTAC opened this month. Many are applying for TAFE or university studies in 2025, while others consider deferring and taking a gap year to work or travel. Apprenticeships and full time work are also options the students are considering.
We have been encouraging students in Year 10, 11 and 12 to attend the tertiary Open Days to find out what they have on offer and to get a sense of the location and facilities.
Erica Wiggins (Year 10) attended both RMIT and Swinburne’s Open Days to find out more about their Engineering courses. She attended information sessions, including one on electrical engineering. She found the experience valuable and came away with a positive feeling about studying at Swinburne in the future.
Some of our Year 12 students also provided the following insight into their Open Day experience at RMIT.
We attended the photography demonstration, where we experimented with lighting and used the facility as we would as uni students. We also went to the business/law building where there was plenty of booths regarding accounting, business and law. Across from the business/law building was the health building that provided information for nursing, dentistry, disability support and medicine. The staff at the booths provided detailed information of the individual courses, they were overall very friendly and welcoming. The university open day was very lively with music and performances that people could join in with!
Kayla, Audrey and Tyloh – Year 12
Ru Brendish (Year 12) has applied for the Australian Defence Force gap year program and is in the process of meeting the application requirements. This program is open to all students who complete Year 12 and are interested in experiencing the Navy, Army or Air Force without making a long-term commitment. It’s a unique opportunity to train, travel, get paid, get a feel for a career in the ADF, and gain skills for life. More information here - https://www.adfcareers.gov.au/careers/gap-year
There are still a number of Open Days in the coming weeks for students to attend. Please see the list on the Compass News Feed.
