Home Group
At the start of the term, our students took on the important task of creating a new Acknowledgement of Country in honour of NAIDOC Week. Each Home Group was challenged to craft their own unique Acknowledgement of Country, reflecting both our local community and this year’s powerful NAIDOC theme: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. An “Acknowledgement of Country says to the world, and more importantly to ourselves, that we accept the fact we are in a place that has a history and story far beyond 220 years. It says to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fellow Australians that we are all in the future journey of our country together.” — Richard Wynne, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Victoria. This sentiment guided our students as they thoughtfully considered how to express the rich history and ongoing significance of the land we stand on.
In the coming weeks, our Indigenous community members will have the opportunity to vote on the Acknowledgement of Country that they feel best captures this year’s NAIDOC theme. The chosen Acknowledgement will be proudly used at Healesville High School events in the future.
In addition to this meaningful project, our staff and students have been actively engaging in Home Group challenges and quizzes. These activities are not only strengthening connections within our school community but also encouraging us all to think more critically and creatively.
Meanwhile, with the excitement of the Paris Olympics, HHS has been hosting a series of lunchtime events every Tuesday. Week one kicked off with racquet sports, followed by field events in week two, and culminating in track events in week three. A standout moment was when one of our student leaders, Bailey, took first place in the 100m sprint. Bailey humorously remarked that although Mr. Donald had talked a big game, he felt confident after witnessing his performance at the HHS Athletics Carnival that he could outpace him with ease.
