Well done to all our sports teams on a great season.  It was wonderful to see so many students having fun and participating in sport this winter.

Term 4 Information

Thank you for completing the Term 4 Sports Nomination Form for Years 7-11.  Based on the nominations received, we have submitted teams to SACSSGSA.

We should find out grading later in the term and we can then finalise teams and coaches.

Intercol Competition

On Wednesday 21 August, Loreto played against Mary MacKillop in our annual intercollegiate competition and what a fun afternoon it was! We played three games of netball, and one soccer match, with Loreto securing three of the four shields.  Thank you very much to all the families who supported this event, it was wonderful to see so many people cheering on our Loreto teams.

  • Soccer – Loreto was defeated 2-4
  • Netball Years 9/10 – Loreto won 30 – 19

Knockout Competition

Congratulations to our Year 10-12 football team who played in the statewide school Grand Final on Friday 30 August.  The competition started with over 30 teams so to finish the competition in second place is a huge achievement! Well done, girls!

Aerobics:

We wish our aerobics teams all the best for the FISAF National Aerobics Championships held in the Gold Coast from Wednesday 28 August until Saturday 1st September.  We have five teams representing Loreto at this competition, good luck girls!

Aerobics on the Gold Coast

Good luck to the Loreto aerobics teams who have headed up to the Gold Coast this weekend for the National Championships.

We finished our local program with the Blitz It Challenge earlier this term. Since then, the last few weeks have been about Nationals preparation. One of our senior school coaches Gina cast a “judge’s eye” over the teams at training recently as the girls look to fine-tune their routines. Hundreds of teams from all over Australia converge on the Gold Coast for this annual event.

Many thanks to Ms Cobb who is marshalling the teams on the ground and a huge thank you to our coaches Ruby, Steph, Poppy, Zara, Zoe and Ruby for all your working preparing the teams!

East Adelaide SAPSASA Athletics Trials

Well done to all the girls who competed in last Friday’s East Adelaide SAPSASA athletics trials. Our students conducted themselves impeccably throughout the day and I hope that they had fun.

We had lots of good placings across all events and age groups but some particularly notable performances were:

  • Amelia Lampit, Mia Frearson-Lea and Alyssa Reed who all made 200m finals
  • Mia Frearson-Lea made the 12yo 100m final
  • Amelia Olive 2nd place in 10yo 800m
  • Eliza Marshall 1st place in 11yo shot put
  • Amelia Lampit 1st place in 10yo long jump
  • Mia Frearson-Lea 1st place in 12yo high jump
  • Mia Frearson-Lea 2nd place in 12yo 100m
  • Mia Frearson-Lea 3rd place in 12yo 200m

Once again it was great to see our students support each other in numbers (and full voice!) throughout the day. The times when you are not competing yourself are just as important as when you are – it’s an opportunity to show your school spirit, your empathy for others and to share in other’s success. Your presence helps your schoolmates settle their nerves and gives them a boost when they need it.

Seeing our students dotted around the track all day cheering on teammates reflects very well on you as people. It is a positive quality that seems ingrained at the school. This spirit was typified by poor Asha, who was unable to race herself due to a muscle strain but spent the day at every Loreto student’s events. Asha probably clocked up more miles than anyone!

Now that all of you have been to one or more of these events and seen how Loreto students conduct themselves, it becomes your responsibility to pass this supportive, team-first behaviour on to newcomers at future school events. This is how school culture is driven as it gets passed on from older students to younger students. No one at Loreto competes alone!

Thank you very much to Ms Edwards who spent the day marshalling the students to their events.

Ms Dottore’s AFLW Coaching Debut

The Year 5 Gold team played against St Peters Girls in the south parklands along Greenhill Road in the IGSSA competition on Tuesday afternoon. Ms Dottore has been coaching the team at training, but this was the first game she was able to attend.

The game was played in near-perfect conditions. It was an even opening half, but Saints pulled 14 points clear during the third quarter. We fought back late in the quarter with some brilliant tackling. Zali took a strong mark and goaled near the ¾ time siren to make the margin 7 points.

For the last quarter Ms Dottore moved Sophie into the midfield where she ran amok, shifted Paloma into defence where she was impassable and slid trump card Charlotte to full forward.

We started to control the ball but couldn’t quite nail the goals. Scores were level with 3 minutes to go when Evie burst clear of a pack and fired on goal. Her shot hit the post which gave us the slenderest of leads.

Saints attacked for the next couple of minutes with our defenders desperately forcing stoppage after stoppage. It was very congested around the Saints’ goal but finally Paloma broke free and sent the ball into the centre. Isabelle, Georgia and Sophie combined through the middle and rushed a kick into our forward line. In a mad scramble in the forward pocket, Charlotte broke a tackle and threaded a goal from a tight angle. Siren! Loreto winners by 7 points.

Loreto 8.5.53 defeated St Peters Girls 7.4.46

Clutch

Definition: Clutch (sports)

“Clutch performance in sports refers to the phenomenon where athletes excel under pressure, commonly known as "in the clutch". These moments can occur at any point during the game and involve plays that significantly impact the outcome of the game.”

Our Year 3 Gold netball team found themselves in a cliffhanger battle with East Marden last Saturday. Scores were tied 8-8 late in the last quarter. In the frantic final seconds, Hazel and Harriet worked the ball into the goal circle where Goal Attack Helen took possession.

Cometh the moment….

With less than 30 seconds on the clock, Helen fired… and scored! Loreto winners 9-8.

Dance! Dance! Dance!

Congratulations to Scarlett Hatcher who recently made the South Australian finals at the Royal Academy of Dance Awards. Scarlett won the highly prestigious Sheila Laing Award, which is awarded to the dancer the judges believe has demonstrated the most potential.

Congratulations also to Madeline Leckie competed in the Evolution Dance Competition last Friday. She danced four solos for the competition, placing 1st for Song and Tap and 3rd for Classical Ballet. Madeline has now qualified for the National Finals which are being held on the Gold Coast in January 2025!

Well done girls on your achievements!

AFLW Grand Final

Last weekend some of our Loreto footballers faced off in the SANFL’s Under 12 grand Final. Mia Frearson-Lea and Sophie Adamson were representing Goodwood while Rudi Fiorillo was playing for Payneham. The grand final was played at Woodville Oval and was tight all day, with Goodwood emerging winners by 11 points. Fortunately, the girls were still speaking to each other after the game! Well done on a great season.
