Book Week: Reading is Magic

In Week 5, we celebrated Book Week with the enchanting theme of "Reading is Magic." The children were thrilled to dress up as their favourite characters and proudly showcased their costumes during a lively book parade held in the Banksia yard. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend quality time with their families and friends, sharing in the joy of reading and creativity.

Throughout the week, we focused on the beloved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, which quickly became a favourite among the children. We used felt puppets on the whiteboard to bring the story to life, making it an interactive and engaging experience. The children eagerly participated in retelling the story, honing their storytelling skills and boosting their confidence in expressing themselves. Ms. Carr encouraged the children to retell the tale, allowing them to practice and develop these important communication skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Book Week in Preschool

Last week we celebrated Book Week. The children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters, sharing books from home and taking part in the Junior school and ELC parades. In Preschool Blue Yarning Times we read the winning Early Childhood Picture Book 'The Concrete Garden' by Bob Graham. This book was a great link to our Community Connections inquiry and also to the children's current interest in rainbows. Together we created collaborative artworks, just like in the story, which reinforced the power of colour and art to build community wellbeing. Collaborative drawings were also a great way to practice respect for peers, our active listening and embracing the ideas of others. In Preschool Gold, preservice teacher Ms O read the story 'We are all welcome'. This story was about a school where students grow and learn from each other's traditions, and the whole community gathers to celebrate the Lunar New Year. All Are Welcome lets young children know that no matter what, they have a place, they have a space, and they are welcome in their school community.
