Year 3 Highlight

In DBL this term, students began by exploring the differences between living and non-living things, comparing animals, plants and other objects. They identified key characteristics such as growth, reproduction, and its ability to respond to the environment. This knowledge aims to help students understand what makes animals and plants a living organism before exploring its life cycle and traits in more depth.

From there, students studied an Australian animal's life cycle, looking at how animals grow, change, and develop over time. Understanding life cycles will allow students to better appreciate the different stages of the animals they may encounter at our upcoming excursion Healesville Sanctuary.

Students have also been learning how to classify animals into their groups such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, based on shared characteristics including where they live, how they move, how they breathe, and how their young are born and raised. As part of this, students explored what makes an animal a marsupial, learning that marsupials give birth to underdeveloped young that continue to grow and develop in their mother's pouch, a feature of many native Australian animals.
