The Latest In Literacy

The Latest in Literacy

With the end of Term 2 upon us and Semester One Reports being released, families and students may be wondering more about the role of literacy in high school. It’s a word that we hear quite often in the news about education but the focus is often on primary schools or focused on the foundational nature of literacy – not necessarily on how literacy develops in high school settings.

To build a deeper understanding of high school literacy, the College has been releasing informative posts via our Instagram page (@viewbankcollege3048) to inform families about literacy in a more nuanced way. If you aren’t following us on Instagram or didn’t see these posts, here are some highlights of what you might have missed.

What is Literacy?

In our first part, we breakdown exactly what literacy is and some of its implications for school settings.

What are the Common Literacy Needs of High School Students?

In our second part, we introduce how literacy skills remain important and continue to develop in high school. You can see some ideas for how to support young people in improving their literacy.

High School Literacy from School to Home

Finally, we explore some of the ways Viewbank College supports literacy in and out of class. When students go home, we also provide some information for how families can help build literacy-rich environments.

 Want to know more?

At Viewbank College, we know that education is most meaningful when a community comes together – including teachers and families – to support young people as they grow and learn. We will be exploring more ways to provide a variety of information into the future but if you’d like to discuss our literacy initiatives or you have other literacy-related enquiries, please contact our Whole School Literacy Learning Specialist via the email below.

Be sure to also follow our Instagram page to keep up to date with the College.
