Canberra Excursion – Exploring Australia’s Democracy in Action

This week, our Stage 3 students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Canberra, diving deep into the heart of Australia’s government and democracy. From the towering halls of Parliament House to the solemn reflection at the Australian War Memorial, each stop offered hands-on learning and eye-opening insight into how our country is shaped and led.

Among the many highlights was a special moment at Government House, where one of our talented students had the unique opportunity to play the piano, filling the grand space with beautiful music. At the Australian War Memorial, our group took part in the moving Last Post Ceremony—laying a wreath in remembrance and respect. It was deeply emotional, and we felt honoured to be part of such a meaningful tribute.

We also explored the National Mint, High Court & Museum, experienced a mock parliamentary debate, and even glimpsed some behind-the-scenes workings of government in action. Along the way, there was no shortage of fun—laughter on the bus, photo ops at every landmark, and friendships strengthened through shared experiences.

It was a rich experience in knowledge, discovery, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Stage 3 Cluster Debating

This term, students from Years 5 and 6 had the exciting opportunity to debate for the Cluster Debating Team. After a competitive selection process, eight enthusiastic participants were chosen to represent our school in this exciting competition.

Team A includes Allison, Steven, Mia, and Chris, while Team B includes Vanessa, Charlotte, Oliver, and Josie. Each week, the affirmative team hits the road to debate at another school, while the negative team hosts the same school right here creating a lively and engaging exchange of ideas.

Throughout the term, it’s been a fantastic learning experience, filled with growth in confidence, teamwork, and critical thinking. We’ve tackled thought-provoking topics such as “All single-use plastics should be banned,” “Sporting stars are paid too much,” “Students should learn a new language at school,” and “Electronics do more harm than good at school.”

We’re thrilled to be wrapping up the term with our final debate on June 20, having proudly competed against four schools across the Diocese. What a brilliant way to challenge ourselves and celebrate our voices.

Leadership word of the week is:

Definition:

Investigate or search out. When you explore a new place, it means seeing or investigating a new place. This does not just simply exploring new places, but it could also involve exploring new friendships.

-How can I explore at school?

-Invite new people to your friend group

-Go out of your comfort zone and explore new people at school

-Explore new games at Snack or Lunch
