But once you’ve got a feathered flock in the family fold, you understand why backyard hens are one of the best kept secrets in excellent pet choices.

Why chooks are the most sustainable pet

• Significantly reduce emissions due to eggs travelling from the coop to kitchen rather than transportation by road or air to your home
• Less organic kitchen waste going to landfills which produces methane (a 25 times more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide)
• Manageable and beneficial levels of chicken manure (rather than industrial loads that produce nitrous oxide – a dangerous contributor to climate change)
• Children are intuitively drawn to the behaviour and benefits of backyard chooks. As a result, they learn about good waste management both in the kitchen and garden!
