In the Art Room...

This week gr 5/6 students completed drawing a self portrait of themselves, blowing a bubble using a balloon as a prop. Grade Prep, 1/2 created artwork based on the book “The Love Monster”.

Gr 3/4 commenced their design of a Botjoy. The project was designed by Portland, Oregon artist Gary Hirsch who believes that art can be the catalyst that connects humans to each other. Thousands of students, designers, activists, artists, Mums, Dads, teachers, and friends are making Bots and giving them to people that they care about.

The idea is simple: You draw a tiny robot on the back of a domino, transforming it into a loving art  object that you gift to people in your life, spreading joy, courage, and inspiration one domino robot at a time! Instead of using dominoes, Ms Brown has cut up and sanded some Cypress wood and the students will be using these to draw their final design on.

Art club is on a Tuesday lunchtime and certain grades will be allocated their own timeslot. This week was gr 5/6’s turn.

Art extension students participated in a photography session last week at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens and this week we printed and chose their entries. Students then used charcoal and large brown paper to create a drawing of a redgum using a loose, flowing technique. These photos will be entered into the Cavendish Redgum Festival 2024.

This year there is a sculpture section in the student gallery. If your child is interested in entering this, please refer to the Cavendish Red Gum Festival facebook page for details. This will not be covered during art lessons this term.

However, Ms Brown will be covering the Redgum Festival topic during lessons so all students have the opportunity to enter a 2D piece into the student exhibition.

Artist of the week awards go to

  • London Reiersen
  • Alexandra Figura
  • Mason Cahill

Photos will be uploaded to our school’s facebook page.

Well done to everyone on a fantastic week of Art!

STEM

Students continued with their biological science unit in STEM this week.

The Preps explored needs and wants and had to draw the five basic needs for humans – air, water, food, sleep and protection.

Grade 1/2 students looked at what animals live in the ocean and had to label the external features for a turtle and shark, as well as the purpose of these features.

Grade 3/4 students explored the cassowary and had to complete a lifecycle for this bird.

Grade 5/6 commenced a three-week experiment, where they will observe grass seeds growing in two different biomes – one biome that receives sunlight and one biome in a dark cupboard. Students are looking forward to observing their seeds growth over the few weeks.

It has been fabulous some grade 5/6 students take the opportunity to attend Friday STEM Club. This is currently offered to grade 5/6 students each Friday between 1:30pm and 2:00pm.

PE Report

This week all classes have loved their PE and despite the warm weather this week, all students continued to try their best in each activity.

This week all classes continued to focus on Athletics with our annual Athletics carnival less than 2 weeks away.

The events we trained for this week were Long Jump, Discus, high jump and the relay. All classes demonstrated great technique throughout each event practice.

It is fantastic to see the great attitudes from all classes this week, and I know we are looking forward to next week’s lesson already where we will continue to get ready for our Athletics day. Be prepared it will be another hot week for PE.

This week the PE awards go to:

Zoe Taylor  – For bringing a great attitude and lots of enthusiasm to all PE lessons.

Zavier Heath – For being a great helper and giving all activities his best effort.

Jordie Alexander – Being a great helper and role model for Prep PE.

We still need helpers for our school Athletics days. If you are able to help on either day (Tuesday 5th March, Track events at Mitchell Park or Wednesday 6th March Field events at school) please let your child’s class teacher know or contact the office.

Thank you,

Mr Watt
