Canoe Wildwater Age Championships

Riley Tyebji , Year 9

The 2024 Paddle Australia’s Canoe Wildwater Australian Age Championships was held in Victoria’s Goulburn River - Eildon, during the summer school holidays. From beginners to veterans, paddlers of all ages from all over Australia gathered for this 3-day event.  The event is known to be the River Racing Australia's 'Festival of Paddle' because it provides an opportunity for experienced paddles to compete and training to many beginner paddlers.

While the event covered Wildwater competitions such as sprint races, classic races (longer distance), and team relays, the spotlight shined on the Slalom events, my personnel favourite. In Slalom, kayaks glide through rapid waters, navigating a series of strategically placed gates. It's not just a test of physical capabilities, but also of mental resilience, as paddlers must make smart decisions to complete the lengthy course while avoiding falling into the rapids.

This year, 29 paddlers from Years 7-12 proudly represented Ivanhoe Grammar School. For some, it was a chance to prove to themselves that they can do it, for others it was earning points for the school they represent and potentially a chance to win a medal. Regardless of the reasoning, it was wonderful for all kayakers to come together at one campsite and enjoy themselves.

Despite the hot weather and early starts, the atmosphere at the campsite was full of excitement throughout all days and nights. Each morning, after breakfast, it was time to dive into a day packed with kayaking races. And as the sunset, we took the opportunity to relax and enjoy with friends.

Dedicated spectators always stood on the riverbank cheering on their schools and club participants. Many thanks to the Ivanhoe Grammar School community, especially to the teachers, parents and KPSG members, for cheering for us, encouraging us, and keeping us safe during the event.  A sincere thank you to Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Hogg for driving us to and from the event and making sure we were fed and out of trouble during the event.

The event was an exciting display of skill (Mr Draper rocked it!), courage, resilience, and determination. Ivanhoe Grammar School won the second place in overall points. Congratulations to all participants.
