Year 5 Bandicoots and Dingoes
We made a splash diving headfirst into Term 4 with daily swimming lessons for the first two weeks. Students eagerly embraced their time in the water, refining their swimming skills and building confidence. The games at the end of each lesson—and especially on the final day—were a big hit!
After swimming, our Year 5 students shifted focus to the fascinating world of mass production and assembly lines. They explored the process by planning their own mini-production line: making pizzas! After researching class preferences, they designed their pizza toppings, prepared ingredient and materials lists, and assigned specific roles to each team member on their group assembly lines. The highlight, of course, was tasting their delicious creations!
To complement this hands-on experience, we took an exciting excursion to Brownes Dairy as part of our Design and Technologies Unit: Food and Fibre. The students saw real-life mass production in action, following milk’s journey from “moo to you.” They even got the chance to milk a cow and explore Brownes' innovation kitchen, where they guessed yoghurt flavours. We were amazed to learn that Brownes uses fruits and vegetables to create their unique flavours—did you know their marshmallow flavoured yoghurt is made from lemon, sweet potato, and black carrot?
The Term 4 excitement continued with the Year 5 Summer Carnival, where students represented our school in cricket, ultimate frisbee, and tennis. We are so proud of their effort, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship. It was a fantastic day full of new experiences, skill-building, and plenty of fun!
The Year 5 cricket team has had an exciting day at our Summer Carnival at Coolbinia Reserve! The students took to the field for a total of four thrilling matches, showing off their skills in batting, bowling, and fielding.
Out of the four games, the team managed to win two, showcasing their competitive spirit and teamwork. Each player had the chance to bat for two overs in each game alongside a partner, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute to the team’s total score. In addition, every player bowled one over per game, ensuring that each member had a chance to show their all-round abilities.
But it wasn’t just with the bat and ball that St Helena's excelled – their fielding was a highlight of the day. The team showed impressive concentration and quick reflexes, making some great stops and taking vital catches, which really helped in restricting the opposition's runs.
Overall, the Year 5 cricket team’s performances were a fantastic display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship. With two wins out of four games, the players are certainly improving with every match. Keep up the great work, team!
