Katie - Year 6 Emus

Katie (Year 6) St Helena’s Catholic Primary School, was part of a team of students who were selected as the Next Generation Of Top Talent In Western Australia.

Entries for the Next Gen Awards 2024 awards program are open to Australian primary and high school students in Grades 4-12, and their educators. In 2024, the Next Gen Awards featured six award categories to acknowledge young people that are building their 21st-century skills, as well as the educators supporting them along the way.

Katie was one of five students who were part of a scouts-team, called the “Challenge Bandits”, nominated in the ‘Dream Team of the Year’ category, as part of the awards program. The Dream Team Of The Year Award category celebrates a team that has demonstrated exceptional collaboration skills as they have brought an innovative or impactful project to life.

The “Challenge Bandits” team comprised students from four schools, across three-year levels and two Scout Groups (Herne Hill and Hampton Park Scout Groups, Scouts WA). The students were from the following schools:

• Sophia Baxter and Stephanie Baxter (Years 9 and 7 respectively, La Salle College)

•Alexii Doney (Year 9, Governor Stirling Senior High School)

•Katie Williams (Year 6, St Helena’s Catholic Primary School)

•Theo Williams (Year 9, Guildford Grammar School)

The scouts tackled some of the some of the world’s biggest challenges, from raising awareness on climate change to reducing poverty and hunger. Through mentoring younger scouts, leading sustainability projects, and supporting local communities, the team demonstrated that collaboration and teamwork can spark real change.

The 2024 Next Gen Awards saw over 100 nominations from across the country. National Winners were announced on the 16th October at a National Awards Ceremony held in Queensland. The Top-10 from Western Australia were selected to showcase their projects at the Next Gen Awards 2024 – Showcase event, held on Tuesday 29th October at St Catherine’s College in Crawley. Information about the Showcase event is attached and can be found at the following link: https://www.bopindustries.com/next-gen-wa

The Showcase event was supported by the Fogary Foundation (who is partnered with various organisations, including UWA, ECU, CEWA and the Department of Education) and is dedicated to celebrating the talents and projects of young leaders across Western Australia. Laura Potts from the Foundation served as a judge for the awards program, noting:

“one highlight of this year’s showcase was the strong theme of sustainability that ran through many of the pitches, reflecting the growing commitment of young leaders to create a positive impact on both their communities and the planet.”
