Core Health and Physical Education

Aim 

Health and Physical Education aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle now and in the future. The physical activity classes focus on the important role physical activity, sport and recreation need to play in the lives of all Australians in meeting the Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines.  It provides opportunities for students to be challenged, achieve personal growth, enjoyment, and personal fitness.   

 

Content

At Year 9, students are exposed to a variety of sports and activities in practical Physical Education sessions including volleyball, athletics, softball, touch football, netball, badminton and fitness. Students will also participate in a practical wellness unit, incorporating yoga, meditation, and mindfulness

 

In Health Education, students learn how to take positive action to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, and wellbeing. Students examine the physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health and wellbeing, demonstrating a range of health seeking strategies that will support them to access and evaluate health information and services. Health content explores four main topics across the year.

  • Respectful Relationships 
  • Safety 
  • Youth Health 

Health and Physical Education aims to promote students' understanding of their personal health and their ability to relate to others to develop self-esteem and effective communication. Emphasis is placed on respectful relationships education. 

 

Assessment

Physical Activity and movement skills: Students will be assessed on their practical execution of skills and movement, their participation, application of individual and team strategies, ability to work in a team, understanding of rules and leadership.

 

Health Education: Students will choose and implement a new strategy designed to have a positive impact on health, then reflect upon how this strategy has affected different areas of their health and wellbeing.

Year 9 Outdoor Education 

Aim

This unit aims to develop awareness of our natural environments and encourage participation in adventure activities focusing on the importance of teamwork and co-operation. Students will develop their knowledge of equipment, basic skill acquisition and address the relevant issues of safety and first aid.

 

Content 

  • Bushwalking and camping skills.
  • Orienteering/map reading skills.
  • Sustainability and climate change.
  • Water-based activities including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
  • Land-based activities including hiking and tree surfing.
  • Camping trip.

Practical Component

Participation in practical trips and camp requires that students miss a small number of other classes. All students must consult their teachers and make a commitment to complete all work from classes missed through attending these practical trips. 

 

 Assessment 

  • Based on attendance and active participation in camp and practical sessions.
  • Receiving a satisfactory grade in theoretical work including Journal Activities and Research Assignments. 

Please note:this subject requires a course fee for excursions and camp. Costs to be confirmed. 

Fitness & First Aid 

Aim 

Students will develop an increased awareness of fitness on a personal level. They will develop an understanding of how to improve fitness and of training requirements to achieve these changes. They will develop a basic understanding of first aid and injury prevention. 

 

Content

  • Basic CPR, prevention, and treatment of common sports injuries.
  • Study of benefits, measurement, and components of physical fitness. 
  • Principles of training and training methods.
  • Designing and participating in a training program.

Practical Component

Participation in fitness-related activities, visiting a fitness centre, patient assessment, CPR, strapping and bandaging and performing CPR on a Manikin.

 

Assessment

Participation in a training program, attendance and participation in class activities, fitness training report, CPR certificate and First Aid quiz.
