Year 11 Leadership Conference

From 1st-3rd May, nineteen of our Year 11 students stepped away from the familiar halls of Ballarat High School to dive into the immersive environment of our annual Leadership Conference, held off campus. This event was not only a testament to their potential as future leaders but also a vibrant exploration of leadership skills tailored to their personal growth and our community's enrichment.

The three-day conference was packed with activities designed to foster both individual and collaborative skills. Students engaged deeply with topics surrounding leadership qualities, delving into their personality types and preferences in leadership roles. These insights are invaluable as they shape their pathways, not just in school but in roles they may assume later in life.

Team-building was another cornerstone of the event, with students participating in a variety of interactive games and a challenging scavenger hunt. These activities were not only fun but also instrumental in building trust, cooperation, and communication among our young leaders.

One of the highlights was the inspiring talk given by Jamiee Maika, a distinguished alumni of Ballarat High School. Jamiee's journey is nothing short of remarkable—originally from New Zealand, she faced academic setbacks in university before rising to significant roles in the Australian Defence Force, even working in America at the Space Centre. Her stories from experiences in Afghanistan, Sydney, and Canberra, coupled with her strong connection to her Maori heritage, captivated our students. Jamie's life, marked by the influential women in her family and her balanced approach to maintaining a good family life, served as a powerful example of resilience and determination.

The conference's major focus was on a project aimed at enhancing student diversity within Ballarat High School. Our students collaborated to conceptualize initiatives that could have a lasting positive impact on our school culture. Their proposals were thoughtful and showcased their collective commitment to inclusivity.

The unity and creativity displayed by all attendees were commendable. As we look back at the conference, we are reminded of the bright future these young leaders are likely to spearhead. We commend our Year 11 students for their exceptional teamwork and dedication to making a difference, both at the conference and beyond.

Well done to our students!
