Year 10 Applied Learning

Year 10 Applied Learning is a Year 10 elective which gives students a taste of the types of learning opportunities that are a part of the VCE Vocational Major in Year 11 and 12.  Ms Adrians’ Year 10 class has been going to the Ballarat Specialist School each week as a part of community engagement in their Applied Learning class.  They volunteer in the classrooms and help students with the activities.

Here are some of their reflections.

There are 7 or 8 prep aged students in the room I am working in. The campus is split into several different areas by locked doors that need to be opened by wristbands worn by the staff.

My time at BSS  was very scary at first. Everyone wanted to get to know me and many students came to ask me questions. One girl, Rebecca, gave me a present which was a lollipop stick with paint in a muffin tin.

We built bridges out of tape, cups and paper for a STEM lesson. The highlight is talking to Tyrone.

The students liked us visiting and I am happy to have met them.

In my group of 6 and 7 year olds we mostly play outside with them. The rooms at BSS are much smaller than at BHS and there are 2 or 3 teachers in each room.

The students do a wonderful job at the Specialist School on Mondays. The staff that I have spoken with have had lots of positive feedback around their visits. They were “blown away” at how quickly our students got involved with the students at BSS.
