Grade 1

Literacy

In the past fortnightly Literacy block, students have begun learning new ways to spell the long vowel sound for the letter ‘i’. The Grade 1’s completed various activities to fortify their knowledge of this. This included introducing ‘Grab Bag’ words where students took turns to pick a ‘long vowel i word’ from a bag, read it to a partner and write down the word in a sentence with an accompanying picture. Working in pairs, this allowed students to correct each other’s work, identifying their own misconceptions.

Students were also introduced to adjectives and have enjoyed identifying these in our learning environment. We have combined singing to help us identify various adjectives!

Writing

Over the first weeks of Term 2, students have been exploring the themes and interesting words in the story book, “Let’s Get a Pup”, written by Bob Graham. The story follows a young girl named Kate who awoke one morning really wanting to get a dog. After convincing her family, they headed to the rescue center and found a cute puppy named Dave and also an older dog named Rosie. After a long night of thinking, they decided to have both. The students have actually read this story before in Prep and it was very interesting and enjoyable hearing them retell the events of the story just by looking at the front cover. They learnt about the words - immediately, briefly and glanced to add to the Helpful House of Words. For a punctuation focus, the students have been practicing writing on dotted thirds and consolidating their understanding of sky, grass and dirt letters.

Maths

To start Term 2, students have continued to consolidate their knowledge of place value. They have been physically counting collections of objects in groups of tens and ones and writing two-digit numbers to match, all the up to 100. Students have also started to learn about number sequences and skip counting by 2’s using resources such as number lines and number charts.  They have also revisited what makes an even number compared to an odd number. Next week, we are excited to build upon the student skip counting abilities and introduce repeating patterns.
