Initia Lit- Reading

In Initial Lit, our Preps have continued to learn and review letter sounds . Students have learnt the sound that each letter represents and its letter name. To help students remember these letters and sounds we were introduced to some new friends Rosie Rabbit, Iggy Insect, Fifi Flamingo and Ollie Otter! They’ve loved learning the sounds and being able to identify them in spoken words and pictures.

In our StoryBook sessions, we've explored the book ‘Farmer John’s Tractor’. Through this story, we've discussed the beginnings, middles, and ends. We've made connections beyond the texts and explored the meaning of vocabulary like trusty, stranded and gushes.

Students have used their sound knowledge to begin segmenting (sounding out) and blending CV (consonant vowel) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. They’ve practised with words including rip, mop, sip, rim, at and rat.

Maths -

This fortnight, the Prep students have been engaging in a new Maths topic! To begin the term, students have been enjoying learning all about patterns and how these can be represented in different ways; shapes, colour, objects and many more! We have loved seeing the students immerse themselves in lots of fun hands-on activities that promote their understanding of two part and three part patterns. The Prep students have particularly enjoyed using different resources to create different patterns.

Integrated -

We have begun our integrated unit this term by discussing what makes each of us unique in our own ways and that our differences are worth celebrating. Students participated in a puzzle project, where they drew a picture of themselves in a puzzle piece and decorated it by drawing things that make them unique, for example eye colour. The children were also encouraged to draw something they like or are good at to further show their individuality.

Last week we also explored what ANZAC day is. Each class identified when ANZAC day is, why it is important and how we celebrate it. Students were encouraged to share the traditions they take part in on ANZAC day, such as; dawn service, parades, bake ANZAC biscuits, wear red poppies/badges and go to the AFL game.

In Respectful Relationships, we have been learning about bravery. Students discussed the different emotions experienced in the story ‘Rose meets Mr Wintergarten’, and identified when and how the characters displayed bravery. We also created a list of different real life situations where we might need to demonstrate the act of bravery. Students learnt that being brave is when they find the strength to have a go even when they feel nervous or afraid. They also learnt that being brave does not mean the feeling of being scared goes away and we linked this to our school value Daring - “Being brave and willing to take risks to challenge ourselves”.

Positive Start -

With the addition of our new class, Prep F, we started Term 2 going through our Positive Start. Students revisited school routines, expectations and values which has set us up in a really positive way and has ensured that the new class has settled in extremely well. This has benefited all students and has seen each student hit the ground running and be prepared for all the wonderful learning ahead in Term 2.
