Project Compassion - Class Challenge

Project Compassion is Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Millions of Australians come together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. The theme for this year’s appeal is For all Future Generations.

This year, the RE School Leaders have set a challenge for each class. The challenge is to show some initiative and organise a fundraiser to raise as much money as you can for Project Compassion. You can do this by yourself, with your family or a group of friends. It might be as simple as asking family and friends for donations because you are committing to giving up something for Lent or a much bigger idea - whatever you like.

This year we have gone hi-tech and created a different website for each class (links below), where your family and friends can go to and donate. If you raise some cash, your parents might be able to take the cash and make the online donation for that amount.

The fundraising target for each class is $20 times the number of students in your class. If you reach the target by Friday 19th April (which is the first Friday of Term 2) your class will get to see your teachers drenched with ice cold water. If you want to see what that feels like - here are the videos from last year.

On the website for each class (links below), you can also see how much money your class has raised so far and how close your class is to the target. There are also posters with a qr code link up on the door to each classroom.

Whole School Mass

We will be having a whole school Mass on Friday 19th April for the Start of Term Two. This will be in the Church at 9.00am. Everybody is most welcome.

A snapshot of RE Learning in 1/2GC

In 1/2 GC we celebrated the Ressurection of Jesus Christ by singing and talking about what this means for all of us. We can all be ressurected by our faith in the Lord. The 5/6 final Passion Play was performed and 1/2 GC thought it was 'amazing, interesting, fabulous, serious and entertaining.' We have been learning about our Gospel Value Fairness. Being fair isn't easy. We can encourage each other by being kind and supportive of others during challenging times. Asking ourselves and others questions helps us gain perspective about what fairness really means. Did Jesus treat others fairly? YES! Did Jesus treat everyone exactly the same way? NO. The story of Zacchaeus highlights this. It is a good example of how some of us need extra love or extra support to guide us in the right direction.  Here is a video and an artwork we created to explain what fairness might look like.

Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread.

They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you!’ In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said, ‘Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.’ And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they could not believe it, and they stood dumbfounded; so he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes.

Then he told them, ‘This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, has to be fulfilled.’ He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, ‘So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.’

Discussion Questions

1. In today’s gospel, what did Jesus first say when he appeared among his disciples?

2. How did the disciples react when they first saw Jesus?

3. What did Jesus do to help them believe that he was really with them?

4. What would you say to Jesus if he was beside you?

5. We meet Jesus in each other and in people around us. How should we react to these people?

We pray that we will always recognise Jesus among us
