Round the classes

Indonesian: Ibu Susan
In Indonesian the younger classes have been busy writing sentences using our key words plus adjectives (including colours) and also numbers. We have used songs and stories to practise these words. Stephen's students are working hard on their animal books and are discovering some great facts about komodo dragons, Sumatran tigers and orangutans. The older students have begun learning how to tell the time in Indonesian which can get a bit tricky. They have also been using online games like Study Stack to reinforce their language learning.

Exploring the Fascinating World of Science – Week 6 Incursion!
What an incredible term it’s been in science – and Week 6 was no exception! We were lucky enough to have another exciting incursion that brought the natural world right into our school.
Students had the amazing opportunity to get hands-on with real fossils, bones, gemstones, rocks, shells, and more. The gym was buzzing with excitement and awe as students examined shark teeth, ancient marine fossils, and glittering crystals up close. The highlight? Every student received their very own goody bag to take home, packed with special treasures like shark teeth, quartz, and beautiful gems.
What’s been even more wonderful to see is how this curiosity is sparking conversations and creativity beyond the classroom. Many students have started sharing their own collections of feathers, rocks, fossils, and gems—some of which are absolutely fascinating! Others are telling personal stories inspired by our science learning, connecting what we explore in class with their own experiences in nature.
Living and learning in Uraidla is a gift. We are surrounded by rich biodiversity—birds, reptiles, marsupials, insects, and all sorts of incredible natural features that offer endless learning opportunities. It’s such a joy to see students so engaged, observant, and eager to explore the world around them.
Stay curious.
PE: Troy
In PE, our early year students have been practising their striking skills using a range of equipment. This has occurred through different stations where students hit moving and stationary items. Students have used cricket bats, baseball bats, tennis racquets, table tennis bats and different balls, including balloons. There has also been a focus on students following set rules to ensure a safe environment that encourages maximum individual participation.
Our older classes have been learning volleyball. They have been taught the skills of digging, setting, serving and spiking. Students have also been taught basic umpiring and scoring as well as strategies when playing modified games.
Sallie's Year 5/6 class have created their own team names, logos and team colours. They will soon have some volleyball tops to use for games and create a mini tournament, where they will score, umpire, and organise a playing timetable.
We are also fortunate to have Chris McHugh onsite next week, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist who will speak to the kids and then lead some activities.
Art: Mrs Tume
The Junior Primary students explored watercolours as part of their visual arts project to create a sunrise and used acrylic paint on top for a silhouette effect. The year 2/ 3 class have experimented with lines, shapes and oil pastels to create artworks continuing their exploration of the art elements. The year 3/ 4 class have completed their collaborative cardboard future communities to display on the wall. The Upper Primary have focused on learning about the history of artist Wassily Kandinsky, his art style and inspiration. Student created their own artwork inspired by the artist using oil pastels.
Gardening: Jo
"Life Cycles" has been the topic this term, focusing on the lifecycle of a plant.
The 2/3 students have observed broad beans from seed to plant in various stages. We'll have to wait to observe the bean pods!
Seedlings have been planted along with seeds in the vegetable garden, as well as in seedlings trays ready for the spring planting season.

Lightning Carnival
On Wednesday, Uraidla Primary was part of a yearly sporting event called Lightning Carnival. It is where many Hills teams gather for various sports. It is for Years 5/6 (although we did have one fill in, thanks Vincent). This year we had 2 netball teams, one basketball side and a 9 a side football team. Around 29 students from our school took part in this event. No results are recorded, and participation of all levels is encouraged. We had a great day with each team having at least 5 games each (shorter games than normal). As usual, I was proud of watching our students encourage each other and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. For these events, we need lots of volunteers ...so thank you to Emily, Angela, Seb, Mignon, and Rob for driving. Also, thanks to Ben, Rob, Troy, and Mignon for coaching with care and consideration. Thanks also go to Jen, who made sure she visited and encouraged all teams.
