Book Week
The theme this year for Book Week was ‘Book an Adventure’ and at THS we celebrated with a book quiz from Mr Polwarth, a staff vs student debate and of course the annual costume parade. Students showcased their creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness on our catwalk and represented their favourite book characters.
Thank you to our Year 12 judges, Lauren, Rebecca and Amelie, who did an amazing job of judging the parade and had the hard task of picking the following winners:
- Best in character performance - Ashwyn Rethinam as Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
- Most original costume - Zach Douglas-Gillett as The Doctor from Doctor Who
- Librarian’s choice award - Luella Bateson as Corpse from A girl called Corpse
- Best group entry - Belinda Hickey, Jaspar Conway and Mr Bason as characters from Warhammer
- 3rd overall best costume - Jemimah Douglas-Gillett as Mr Tumnus from The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe
- 2nd overall best costume - Mariah Nash as The Lorax
- Overall best costume - Joe Joyce as The White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland (for the 5th year in a row!)
This year we renamed the best homemade costume award - ‘The Glenn Bason award for the most original homemade costume’ in recognition of all the years of enthusiasm Mr Bason has had for Book Week and his time and passion for helping students with their costumes. The inaugural winner of the Glenn Bason award for most original costume was Dana Tingwell as the sheep from Where’s the Green Sheep?
Recommended Books
Earlier in the year, some of the Library Leaders Max and Isabelle interviewed Ms Mackie about what she was currently reading and what her favourite books of all time are. As we don’t have a copy of her favourite - I Who Have Never Known Men - in the THS Library, I recommended some other feminist classics including Woman on the Edge of Time and the graphic novel adaptation of Parable of the Sower.
Maci from Year 7 recommends Don’t Let the Forest In, here is their review:
5 starssss. I used to only read horror and no other genre because it is the most thrilling experience. I stopped and started reading fantasy and romance, but when I saw the blurb for this book - I tried to get my hands on it as fast as I could. And… I was NOT let down. This is by far the best horror (and some romance) book I have ever read. It captivated me from the start, and I continued to read every night as much as I could because I couldn’t stop. From the moment Andrew started going through pain and the story started unravelling, my heart kept beating faster, and when a book does that to someone, you can tell it is an amazing book. Once I was near the end of the book, and everything was coming into place, I nearly cried, because nothing has made me feel so attached to the storyline. The language was VERY poetic and engaging. The characters, as well, were so complicated and unique, which I know I will not find in any other book.

Multicultural Week
To celebrate Multicultural Week in the Library, we created two displays to highlight books that explored different cultures or were set in multiple countries. It was a fabulous way to highlight the diversity of our collection and to start conversations about multiculturalism of our school community.
Staff Book Club
At our last Staff Book Club meeting we discussed Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabriele Zevin. There were mixed reviews, but most of us agreed that the first half was very enjoyable except the characters seemed like awful people who didn’t really grow. The exploration of the creation of video games and the nostalgic descriptions of the ‘90s and ‘00s were also fantastic elements.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge that Prue will be leaving our Library team at the end of this term and take this opportunity to thank her for all that she has contributed to the THS Library. All the best for the future, Prue!
