Humanities Department Update

It’s been a busy year in the Humanities KLA. Students across our school have been engaged in exploring the curriculum beyond the walls of the classroom. This term alone, Humanities offerings included:
- Y7 First Nations Day incursion
- Y9 Geography Edendale Community Farm visit
- Y10 Geography regular trips to Darebin Creek for fieldwork
- Y11 Geography fieldwork trip to Anglesea
- Y11 History trip to Vietnam Veteran’s War Museum in Phillip Island
As part of their First Nations curriculum, Year 7’s were challenged to make a gunyah (shelter) that was waterproof. I was very impressed with 7C’s efforts, with the majority managing to keep any water from entering the cup we placed under their shelter.
The Year 11 Fieldwork trip to Anglesea this week was a great day out! Students were tasked with investigating the question “How is Anglesea impacted by tourism, and how effectively are the impacts of tourism managed?” As part of their data collection, students were required to survey business owners, locals and tourists, as well as take field sketches, site observations, and bin and rubbish counts. Our Year 11 students were excellent representatives of our school, with many receiving compliments on the way they conducted themselves, receiving free hot chocolates and baked goods as a result. Students will now start to process this data back in class and will complete their Fieldwork Report when they return next term.
We are already looking forward to Term 4, with the Year 9 Geography camp to Sorrento and the Year 10 Business and Civics excursions to the State Parliament being two highlights. Thank you to all our Humanities staff and students for their hard work this term.
