Dear Students/Parents and Carers,

It’s wonderful to be back in the swing of learning for 2026. We have warmly welcomed our new Year 10 and 11 cohorts, and they have already begun embracing the “JMSS Way” by stepping outside their comfort zones and giving new things a go both in and out of the classroom. Our Year 11 students have now embarked on their first full year of the VCE program, while our Year 12s have taken their first steps into the fast‑paced final year of high school - a year in which they will challenge themselves, discover their strengths, and create memories that will stay with them long after graduation.

To set every year level up for success, students have participated in induction and information sessions designed to help them understand the structure of Year 10 and the VCE, clarify expectations, and learn practical strategies for making the most of the year ahead. During Year 12 camp, students were also asked to identify their personal “support team”, that is, those trusted adults, peers, teachers, and mentors who students can guidance, encouragement, or a listening ear. This is a valuable task for all students, as those who feel supported are more likely to grow, persevere, and stay confident when facing challenges.

By now, students should be well on their way to establishing consistent study routines. They are encouraged to experiment with different study strategies (beyond simply rereading or rewriting notes) to find what helps them truly consolidate their learning. Creating a distraction‑free study space at home can also make a big difference to their focus and productivity.

At our first whole‑school assembly, we celebrated the achievements of both current students and recently graduated alumni. Our 2025 dux, Georgi Demosthenos, along with the 2025 Platinum Diploma awardees, Kiana Pedram and Joel Tan, shared their insights into what contributed to their success at JMSS. Each of them encouraged students to aim for balance and to ensure they make time for activities that bring joy and perspective. We also heard from students who recently participated in the ASI Science Olympiad and the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics summer schools. Their stories highlighted not only the incredible learning opportunities available, but also the sense of excitement and possibility that comes from saying “yes” to new challenges.

I am looking forward to working with the JMSS community to make 2026 a year of growth, discovery and achievement.
