Photography MAP Excursions: Learning Beyond the Classroom

This term, our Photography MAP students have been out and about, exploring Melbourne’s natural and cultural landscapes through the lens.
Our first afternoon excursion took us to the mangroves at Tooradin, where students spent the arvo immersed in the unique coastal environment. With cameras in hand, they carefully observed textures, reflections and natural light — so much so that a few passers-by mistook us for a science class conducting fieldwork! Students captured some outstanding images, experimenting with composition and perspective while gaining a deeper appreciation for our local environment.
We also visited the iconic National Gallery of Victoria to experience the powerful Women Photographers 1900-1975: A Legacy Of Light exhibition. The visit began with an engaging and insightful introductory talk that helped students understand the themes, historical context and significance of the works on display. For many of our students, this was their first visit to the NGV, and they explored the world-class gallery with genuine awe and curiosity.
These excursions have not only strengthened students’ technical photography skills but also broadened their creative thinking and cultural awareness. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they engage with both natural and artistic environments. We look forward to seeing how these inspirations influence their upcoming photographic work.
